SECTION 2 - INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

DOS:
Insert Disk 1 and switch to the floppy disk prompt by typing A: or B:. If
you are playing the CD version, insert the CD and switch to the CD
drive by typing the drive letter followed by a colon. Ex: D:. Then type
INSTALL to begin the installation program. Follow the on-screen
prompts to complete the installation.

WINDOWS:
Insert Disk 1 or the CD into the appropriate drive. From Program
Manager, click on File, then Run. In the Command Line field, type the
letter of the drive followed by \SETUP. Ex: B:\SETUP, D:\SETUP.
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.

SECTION 3 - COMMON INSTALLATION PROBLEMS

PROBLEM: After typing INSTALL, a row of dots goes across the screen
and stops. The computer is then locked up, with the row of dots on
screen. (DOS version only.)
SOLUTION: The dots indicate the hardware detection portion of the
installation program. You can bypass this section (and therefore the
lock-up) by typing INSTALL/M. If this does not work, try INSTALL/F.
One of these entries should get you past the lock-up.

PROBLEM: During installation, you receive an error message saying
'You do not have a 256 color driver loaded in Windows.' (Windows
version only.)
SOLUTION: Sierra's Windows games require that Windows is running in
256 color mode. Even though your monitor and video card may be
capable of displaying 256 colors, Windows may not be set up to use this
resolution. To check, double-click on Windows Setup in the Main
program group. If the Display line reads 'VGA' or '16 color', you will
need to change to a driver that supports 256 colors. ('VGA' is a default
Windows video driver that only supports 16 colors and will not work
with Sierra's Windows games.) To change video drivers, select Options,
then Change System Settings. Open the Display box to see the list of
video drivers that are currently available. You should check your video
card documentation for information on what 256 color driver to select.

If you choose a video driver that is not designed for your particular
video card, Windows will not display properly. If this occurs, change to
your Windows directory, type: SETUP, and choose the 'VGA' driver
again. You should contact your video card manufacturer for the correct
driver.

PROBLEM: When installing the game, you receive an error message:
'Data error reading drive A'. Drive letter will vary depending on what
drive you're using. (DOS and Windows versions.)
SOLUTION: This is probably a faulty disk, and should be returned for
replacement. Please see your game documentation for disk replacement
procedures.

SECTION 4 - WINDOWS AND DOS ISSUES

This section contains issues that occur in both the DOS and Windows
versions of Police Quest 4. DOS and Windows-specific issues follow.

PROBLEM: When starting the game, you get an 'Out of rect list room'
error message.
SOLUTION: This is an incompatibility with Logitech's MouseWare v6.4.
Upgrading to v6.41 will correct the problem. Logitech provides
upgrades free of charge to registered users. Their Technical Support
phone number is (510) 795-0801 and their BBS is (510) 795-0408.

PROBLEM: You can't arrest Walker at the courthouse. There is not
enough time to get the cuffs on him.
SOLUTION: You need the Police Quest 4 patch disk (PQ4CUF for the
floppy version of the game only.) See the section 'Obtaining a Sierra
Patch Disk' later in this document. If you have the CD version of the
game, the patch will not correct this problem. Turn the game speed all
the way up and the detail all the way down to make the character move
as quickly as possible. Make sure you are clicking the cuffs directly on
Walker. This should correct the problem in the CD version.

PROBLEM: When you start the game, the screen goes black or displays
an Error 47.
SOLUTION: This happens when the patch disk has been used on the CD-
ROM version of the game. Delete and Reinstall the game.

PROBLEM: Detective Cary went into Griffith Park to investigate a
murder scene and is unable to leave.
SOLUTION: Use the map icon in the menu bar. The map icon is between
the inventory icon and the control panel icon.

SECTION 5 - COMMON DOS PROBLEMS

PLEASE NOTE: Unless otherwise stated, these problems and solutions
apply to both the 3.5 disk and the CD ROM version of Police Quest 4.

PROBLEM: You get an 'insufficient memory' message when attempting
to run the game - even though you have lots of conventional memory
available. (This usually happens on 4 meg systems, but can occasionally
occur on computers with more RAM.)
SOLUTION: The Police Quest 4 program uses a 'DOS extender' which
allows the game to use very little conventional memory (less than 400k)
and access your computer's upper memory directly. If this upper
memory is being used by TSR's loaded high - your mouse or CD ROM
drivers, for example - you can get this error message. To correct this,
run the game with a boot disk. To create a boot disk, you can use the
boot disk instructions attached to this document or rerun the INSTALL
program and choose 'Make Bootable Floppy' from the Installation
Options menu.

PROBLEM: You get a 'DOS 4GW Professional Error' when starting the
game.
SOLUTION: This error message indicates that memory is low or
inaccessible. If you have less than 4 megs (the minimum memory
requirement), you will get this error message. Police Quest 4 will not
run on computers with less than 4 meg. If you have 4 megs of RAM,
run the game with a boot disk. To create a boot disk, you can use the
boot disk instructions attached to this document or rerun the INSTALL
program and choose 'Make Bootable Floppy' from the Installation
Options menu.

PROBLEM: When starting the game, you get an error message 'Memory
Allocation Error, cannot load command. System halted.'
SOLUTION: Locate and run the VESA driver for your video card. This
will change the computer's memory allocation and prevent this error.
Contact your video card manufacturer or consult your video card
documentation for information on obtaining and installing the VESA
driver for your video card.

PROBLEM: An 'Unable to recognize video card' error is displayed when
game starts.
SOLUTION: This error commonly occurs with Police Quest v1.1 with
customers who have a Quadtel video card with a VESA driver loaded.
Try running the game from Windows using a 256 color driver. If this
doesn't fix the problem, make a boot disk without the VESA driver
being loaded.

PROBLEM: When starting program, game locks up or crashes with the
message 'Unexpected Interrupt'.
SOLUTION: There are several factors which can cause this problem.
1. Run the game under a boot disk environment. To create a boot disk,
you can use the boot disk instructions attached to this document or rerun
the INSTALL program and choose 'Make Bootable Floppy' from the
Installation Options menu.
2. There could be a sound card conflict. Rerun the INSTALL program
and choose PC speaker for Music and No Audio/Voice Card for Audio.
If the game starts fine without the sound card activated, check the sound
card settings. See the 'Sound Card Settings' section of this document.
3. You may need the Police Quest 4 patch disk. (PQ4PAT for the
floppy version, ). The patch will correct some lockups and Unexpected
Interrupts. See the section 'Obtaining a Sierra Patch Disk' later in this
document.

PROBLEM: When starting the game, an error message is displayed, 'Fatal
- Class #47 too large: script cpp.522
SOLUTION: This commonly occurs when the sound card drivers are not
installed on the boot disk. Copy the sound card drivers from the hard
drive CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to the boot disk. Section 12
contains an extensive list of sound cards and their drivers.

PROBLEM: Game crashes with large (mode 40) text on the screen. Text
may contain the words 'crash address'. May happen when program is
started or randomly within the game.
SOLUTION: Run the game under a boot disk environment. To create a
boot disk, you can use the boot disk instructions attached to this
document or rerun the INSTALL program and choose 'Make Bootable
Floppy' from the Installation Options menu.

PROBLEM: You can't go to certain map locations in the game.
SOLUTION: Use a different mouse driver in the DOS version of the game.
Try running the game in the VGA 256 color mode. To change modes,
edit the RESOURCE.CFG in the C:\SIERRA\PQ4 directory. Change the
line: videoDrv=VESA.DRV to videoDrv=STD.DRV. (For CD-ROM
versions of the game, Copy the STD.DRV from the FLOPINST
directory on the CD to the PQ4 directory.) Please note: A low
resolution installation with a small installation of the game may not
work. This procedure is recommended for the full installation of the
game.

PROBLEM: You are unable to pickup a box of ammo at the Target Range.
SOLUTION: Some mouse drivers do not work well with SVGA graphics
modes. The symptoms include being unable to pick up small objects
and the mouse cursor acting like it is on a grid or moving in small
jumps. To correct this try doing the following:

1. Use a different mouse driver.
2. Run in DOS VGA 256 color mode (low resolution).
3. Install the game in Windows.

PROBLEM: The picture seems to be dimmed or dark.
SOLUTION: Try running the game in the VGA 256 color mode. To change
modes, type edit the RESOURCE.CFG in the C:\SIERRA\PQ4 or
PQ4CD directory. Change the line: videoDrv=VESA.DRV to
videoDrv=STD.DRV. (For CD-ROM versions of the game, Copy the
STD.DRV from the FLOPINST directory on the CD to the PQ4
directory.) Please note: A low resolution installation with a small
installation of the game may not work. This procedure is recommended
for the full installation of the game.

PROBLEM: The icon bar does not appear when you move the cursor to
the bottom of the game screen.
SOLUTION: This may be caused by corrupt files or a bad installation.
Run a CHKDSK /F or a SCANDISK from the C prompt to fix any lost
allocations. Then delete the game and reinstall under a boot disk
environment. If this problem continues, delete and reinstall the small
install.

PROBLEM: Random lockups during the game using the Gravis
Ultrasound card.
SOLUTION: Sierra and Gravis have developed new drivers for use with
the GUS card and our other 32-bit programs. The driver is named
GUS32. See the section 'Obtaining a Sierra Patch Disk' later in this
document for information on getting this driver.

PROBLEM: You receive an 'out of low memory' message during the
game.
SOLUTION: There are two possible solutions to this memory issue. First,
try making a boot disk and running the game under the boot disk
environment. You can use the boot disk instructions attached to this
document or rerun the INSTALL program and choose 'Make Bootable
Floppy' from the Installation Options menu. If you make the boot disk
through the INSTALL program, add the following lines to the
CONFIG.SYS:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH

If the boot disk does not help, you need the Police Quest 4 patch disk
(PQ4PAT for the floppy version only). See the section 'Obtaining a
Sierra Patch Disk' later in this document.

SECTION 6 - COMMON WINDOWS PROBLEMS

PROBLEM: When you double-click on the Police Quest 4 icon, you get an
error message 'Watcom Win386 - Not running on a 386 DPMI
implementation'
SOLUTION: Windows is probably in Standard mode. Exit to DOS and
restart Windows by typing WIN /3. When you are back in Windows,
check your swap file settings under Virtual Memory in the 386Enhanced
section of Control Panel. You should have a permanent swap file of 5-
10 megs set up.

PROBLEM: When starting the game, you receive an error message 'Police
Quest 4 requires support for 256 colors'.

If this occurs, change to
your Windows directory, type: SETUP, and choose the 'VGA' driver
again. You should contact your video card manufacturer for the correct
driver.

PROBLEM: When starting the game, Windows displays 'Insufficient
memory. Close one or more applications and try again.'
SOLUTION: First, make sure you are not running any other programs in
Windows. Disable all screen savers, virus scans, IconHearIt, etc. Then,
make sure your swap file is at 5-10 megs permanent. You can change
the swap file through the Virtual Memory Setting in the 386 Enhanced
section of Control Panel. In addition, if you're using an alternate
Windows desktop like Norton or PCTools, use plain Program Manager
instead. You can also make a Windows boot disk to free up memory.
Windows boot disk instructions are included with this document.

PROBLEM: The Police Quest 4 window does not fill the whole screen..
SOLUTION: You are running Windows in a resolution higher than
640x480. In 800x600 and 1024x768, the game window will be smaller
than the screen. Switching to 640x480 will cause the game window to
fill the whole screen.

PROBLEM: The game suddenly crashes to a black screen. There may be
a blinking white cursor in one corner.
SOLUTION: This is usually caused by outdated or incompatible Windows
video drivers. You should contact your video card manufacturer to
obtain the latest version of their Windows drivers. If you are playing
the floppy disk version of the game, the Police Quest 4 patch disk
(PQ4PAT) may correct the problem. See the 'Obtaining a Sierra Patch
Disk' section of this document.

SECTION 7 - DOS SOUND PROBLEMS AND SOUND CARD CONFIGURATION

SOUND CARD CONFIGURATION
In DOS, the best sound card settings for a SoundBlaster compatible card
are I/O 220, DMA 1 and IRQ 5 or 7. If you're using a ProAudio card,
the best settings are I/O 220, DMA 3 and IRQ 5 for the ProAudio
portion of the card, set the SoundBlaster portion of the card to DMA 1
and IRQ 7. Make sure that the Sound Blaster and ProAudio portions do
not share the same DMA! Settings outside these parameters can cause
lockups and/or choppy, repeating or garbled speech. Most sound cards
have test utilities that will tell you what settings you are using. Check
your sound card documentation for information on diagnosing and
changing these settings.

PROBLEM: The game locks up when a digital sound is played (a door
opening for example) or when the 'scoring' bell rings.
SOLUTION: This usually happens with SoundBlaster 16 and compatible
cards. To fix it, rerun the INSTALL program, change Music to
SoundBlaster/Adlib and Audio to Thunderboard. Also, check the sound
card settings; see 'Sound Card Configuration' above.

PROBLEM: Choppy, repeating or garbled speech. (CD version only.)
SOLUTION: This occurs when the sound card settings conflict or are
outside the parameters in the above section 'Sound Card Configuration'.
The sound card settings must be changed to avoid conflict with other
devices or to be within the parameters described above.

PROBLEM: Sound or music cuts out occasionally.
SOLUTION: This usually happens with SoundBlaster 16 and compatible
cards. To fix it, rerun the INSTALL program, change Music to
SoundBlaster/Adlib and Audio to Thunderboard. If this does not help,
edit the RESOURCE.CFG file in the game directory and change the
'audiosize=xx' line to 'audiosize=64'. You may have to experiment
with the audiosize value; you can set it as high as 127. You should also
check your sound card settings. See the above section 'Sound Card
Settings'.

PROBLEM: Using a Reveal sound card, the music sounds great, but the
voices are barely audible. (CD version only.)
SOLUTION: Create a boot disk using the boot disk instructions at the end
of this document. Add the following lines to the AUTOEXEC.BAT:

C:
CD\MMP16P\UTILITY
SETMODE /MSS
SG16MIX
SG16MIX /Q
CD\

Then, reinstall the game and choose Microsoft Windows Sound System
for both Audio and Music. Reboot the computer with the boot disk and
the voices should be fine. NOTE: Some Reveal sound cards may have a
different directory name. You should check your sound card
documentation for more information.

PROBLEM: No sound in the game after booting up with a boot disk. This
often occurs with the SoundBlaster 16, but occasionally happens with
other sound cards.
SOLUTION: Many sound cards have drivers or initialization lines that
must be loaded in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. Some
sound cards that require these drivers or initialization routines are the
SoundBlaster 16, MAD16 and the Aria 16. Section 12 - Sound Card
Driver Information contains the sound card lines for many common
sound cards. Check to see if your sound card is on the list. If it is, then
you will need to add the appropriate lines to the AUTOEXEC.BAT
and/or CONFIG.SYS on your boot disk. If your sound card is not on the
list, you should check your documentation for information on what
needs to load in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.

SECTION 9 - WINDOWS SOUND ISSUES

SOUND CARD CONFIGURATION
In Windows, there are two places to configure the sound card. First, you
must make sure that the correct sound card drivers are installed in the
Drivers section of Control Panel. These drivers control the music
playback and the digital sound (.WAV files or speech files) capabilities
of your sound card in Windows. The following drivers are included with
Windows and should be present in the Drivers section of Control Panel:

MIDI Mapper
Timer
[MCI] MIDI Sequencer
[MCI] Sound

If you are missing any of these drivers, they can be installed by choosing
the Add button in the Drivers window and installing them off of your
Microsoft Windows Installation disks. In addition to these standard
Windows drivers, there should be two or three sound card-specific
drivers. These drivers should have the name of your sound card in their
title. If these are missing, you will need to reinstall the sound card
drivers off of the sound card installation disks. To check and see if the
drivers are installed correctly, open the Media Player in the Accessories
group. Choose Device from the menu, and in the list that pops down,
you should see at least a MIDI Sequencer and Sound listing. If they are
not in the list, even after reinstalling the [MCI] drivers, your drivers are
still not installed correctly and you should contact your sound card
manufacturer for additional help.

The music portion of the game is controlled by the MIDI Mapper. The
Sound Blaster 16, Sound Blaster Pro, Pro Audio Spectrum 16, and
compatibles support 'Base FM' in this Windows game. These settings
are defined in the MIDI Mapper. If your MIDI Mapper is configured
incorrectly, you may hear just music and no voice, or vice versa. The
following MIDI Mapper instructions cover the most common types of
sound card setups. If you are using a sound card that is not listed here,
please consult your sound card documentation for the correct MIDI
Mapper setup.

Sound Blaster 16, Sound Blaster Pro, Pro Audio cards and
compatibles: Click on Main, then Control Panel and then on MIDI
Mapper. If you have an option called Basic FM or something similar,
choose it. Close MIDI Mapper and run King's Quest VII. If you don't
have a Basic FM option you will need to make a new setup. From the
MIDI Mapper screen, click on New. Enter a name such as 'Basic FM'
and then hit OK. You will be at a screen with four columns and 16
rows. Click on the word None in the 3rd column and the 13th row.
Now click on the small arrow that appears on the right of this box.
Choose the FM choice or Synthesizer choice. Do this for ports 13, 14 ,
15, and 16. Click on OK and close out the MIDI Mapper. The music
and voices should now play correctly in King's Quest VII. For further
information on the correct MIDI Mapper configuration for your sound
card, please contact your sound card manufacturer.

PROBLEM: When starting the game, you get a 'Waveout Open' error
message.
SOLUTION: This error is caused by two programs trying to use the sound
card at the same time. If you are using any sound-related Windows
programs like screen savers, IconHearIt, Wired for Sound, etc., you
should disable them before you start the game. Packard Bell's
Navigator will also cause this problem; you should turn Navigator off
before you start the game. (You can prevent Navigator from loading
automatically by dragging its icon from the Startup group to the
Accessories group and restarting Windows.)

PROBLEM: Music and voices cut out.
SOLUTION: Edit the RESOURCE.WIN file in the game directory and
change the 'winAudioSize=20' to 'winAudioSize=40'. If this doesn't
help, try increasing it, but don't set it higher than 127.

PROBLEM: Using a Pro Audio Spectrum 16, you get static during
opening music and when characters are speaking. (CD version only.)
SOLUTION: This happens when the Pro Audio portion of the sound card is
set to DMA 3. DMA 3 is the Pro Audio's 8-bit DMA. Changing the
DMA setting to DMA 5 (the 16-bit DMA) will correct this problem. For
information on changing the DMA setting, please consult your sound
card documentation.

SECTION 10 - OBTAINING A SIERRA PATCH DISK

The patches available for Police Quest 4 are:

PQ4PAT - This patch corrects some fatal errors and lockups within the
game. Floppy version ONLY. ALL SAVED GAMES PRIOR TO
INSTALLATION OF PATCH WILL BE UNUSABLE.
PQ4CUF - This patch allows player to arrest Walker at the Courthouse.
Floppy version ONLY.
GUS32 - New Gravis drivers for Sierra's 32-bit DOS games.
SBSCI32 - New SoundBlaster driver to allow for I/O addresses other
than 220. (This is the ONLY function of this driver.)

PLEASE NOTE: The PQ4PAT and PQ4CUF patches are for the floppy
disk version of the game only. The CD version of Police Quest: Open
Season incorporates these patches. Installing these patches on the CD
version will cause lockup, fatal errors and file corruption. So don't do
it!

The fastest way to obtain a Sierra patch disk is to download it from one
of the following online services: the Sierra BBS (206-644-0112),
CompuServe (GO SIERRA) or America OnLine (KEYWORD
SIERRA). You can also request a patch disk be mailed to you by
calling Sierra Technical Support at 206-644-7697, faxing to 206-644-
7697 or writing to Sierra On-Line Patch Disks, Dept. 10, PO Box 485,
Coarsegold, CA 93614-0485.

SECTION 10 - BOOT DISK INSTRUCTIONS

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read the entire instructions prior to
starting at Step 1. You can skip Step 2 if you are playing the Windows
version and steps 3 and 4 if you are not playing the CD version of Police
Quest: Open Season.

STEP 1
FORMATTING THE DISK
To make a boot disk, format a high density diskette in the A: drive. (It is
necessary to reformat the disk if it is already formatted.) Formatting the
disk with the /S switch will transfer the 'system files' to the disk and
allow the computer to boot up correctly. The disk must be in the A:
drive; the computer will not boot from the B: drive. Type the FORMAT
command as follows:

FORMAT A: /S <ENTER>

If you get a 'Bad command or file name' error message, type:

PATH=C:\DOS <ENTER>

Then retype the FORMAT command above. If you receive the error
again, the MS-DOS FORMAT command may not be on your system, or
it may have been renamed. Programs such as PC Tools and Norton Disk
Utilities sometimes rename the FORMAT command to prevent
accidental loss of data. If you are using a program of this type, check
your documentation to find out how to format a SYSTEM DISK, then
proceed to Step 2.

STEP 2
LOCATING THE MOUSE DRIVER (skip if playing the Windows
version of Police Quest: Open Season)
Sierra's DOS games require that a Microsoft compatible mouse driver
be loaded into memory before playing the game. There are two kinds of
mouse drivers available: those that load in the CONFIG.SYS file and
those that load in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. CONFIG.SYS mouse
drivers have an extension of .SYS (MOUSE.SYS) and
AUTOEXEC.BAT drivers have either a .COM or .EXE extension
(MOUSE.COM, MOUSE.EXE). You must load at least one of these
drivers, but it is not necessary to load them all.

If you do not know where the mouse drivers are located on your system,
the command below should help you locate them. Type the following at
the C:\ prompt:

DIR MOUSE* /S <ENTER>

This command will cause the system to search all subdirectories for a
file called MOUSE. If the system locates a MOUSE file, it will display
the path where the file is located. For example, if the MOUSE.COM file
is located in a C:\MOUSE directory, the system will display:

Directory of C:\MOUSE
	MOUSE.SYS 55160 03-10-92	3:10a
	MOUSE.COM 56408	03-10-03	6:00a

If this procedure does not locate a MOUSE file, your mouse driver may
have a different name; some common names for mouse drivers are
IMOUSE, GMOUSE and HPMOUSE. Your should check your mouse
documentation for the exact file names and how to install them.

Once you have located the mouse driver, you must copy it to the boot
disk. The following example assumes that the mouse drivers are located
in the C:\MOUSE directory as shown in the step above. To copy the
MOUSE files to the boot disk, type:

COPY C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.* A: <ENTER>

Substitute the appropriate path and file names for your mouse drivers in
the command above. After you press ENTER, you should see a message
indicating that some files were copied.

STEP 3
LOCATING THE CD ROM DEVICE DRIVER (skip if not playing the CD version)
The CD ROM drive requires a device driver loaded in the CONFIG.SYS
file. This driver must be loaded correctly or you will be unable to access
your CD ROM drive. To make sure that the device driver loads correctly
on the boot disk, look at the CONFIG.SYS on the hard drive and copy
the driver line from there. At the C:\ prompt, type:

TYPE CONFIG.SYS|MORE

NOTE: The | is called a 'pipe' command and is created by pressing
<SHIFT> <BACKSLASH>.

The CONFIG.SYS file will display on the screen. Look for the line that
loads the CD ROM device driver. This line will contain the same '/D:'
switch as the MSCDEX line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Using the
MSCDEX example above, you would be looking for a line containing
'/D:MSCD001'. The line should look something like this:

DEVICE=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220
DEVICEHIGH /L:14652 =C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220

The device driver in your CONFIG.SYS may differ slightly from those
listed above. Carefully write down the line for use in your boot disk.
Leave out the 'HIGH' in 'DEVICEHIGH' and the '/L:' information, if
any. Your CD ROM device line should appear as follows:

DEVICE=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220

NOTE: If you have a SCSI CD ROM drive, there may be an additional
driver in your CONFIG.SYS that must be loaded for the CD ROM
device drivers to load correctly. Check your CD ROM drive
documentation for more information.

STEP 4
LOCATING THE MSCDEX CD ROM EXTENSION (skip if not playing the CD version)
In addition to the CD ROM device driver in the CONFIG.SYS, your CD
ROM drive requires MSCDEX, the Microsoft extension for CD ROM
drives. If this extension is not loaded correctly in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT, you will be unable to access your CD ROM drive.
To make sure that MSCDEX loads correctly on the boot disk, look at the
AUTOEXEC.BAT on the hard drive and copy the MSCDEX line from
there. At the C:\ prompt, type:

TYPE AUTOEXEC.BAT|MORE <ENTER>

The AUTOEXEC.BAT file will display on the screen. Look for the line
that loads the MSCDEX extension. It should look something like this:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001
LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001
LOADHIGH /L:14429 C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001

The MSCDEX line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT may differ slightly from
the ones above. Carefully write down the entire line following the drive
letter. Include the full drive and path to the MSCDEX file and leave out
any LH or LOADHIGH commands. For example, any of the above lines
should appear as follows:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001

This is how the line will appear in the AUTOEXEC.BAT on your boot
disk.

STEP 5
LOCATING THE SOUND CARD DRIVERS
Many sound cards have drivers or initialization lines that must be loaded
in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. Some sound cards that
require these drivers or initialization routines are: SoundBlaster 16,
MAD16 and the Aria 16.

Section 11 contains the sound card lines for
many common sound cards. Check to see if your sound card is on the
list. If it is, then you will need to add the appropriate lines to the
AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS on your boot disk. If your
sound card is not on the list, you should check your documentation for
information on what needs to be loading in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS.

STEP 6
CREATING THE CONFIG.SYS FILE
To create the CONFIG.SYS file on the boot disk, switch to the A: drive
and type the following:

COPY CON CONFIG.SYS <ENTER> (the cursor will drop down one line and blink)
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS <ENTER>
DOS=HIGH,UMB <ENTER>
FILES=30 <ENTER>
BUFFERS=20 <ENTER>

If you are using the MOUSE.SYS file to load your mouse, add the
following line to the CONFIG.SYS:

DEVICE=A:\MOUSE.SYS <ENTER>

If you're playing a CD game, add the CD ROM device driver as you
wrote it down above. For example:

DEVICE=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220 <ENTER>

If you need to load any sound card drivers, copy them from the 'Sound
Cards' section now. The following example lines are for the
SoundBlaster 16:

DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220 I:5 D:1 H:5 <ENTER>
DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTMM.SYS <ENTER>

Complete the file by pressing <F6> <ENTER>.

STEP 7
CREATING THE AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE
To create the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the boot disk, switch to the A:
drive and type the following:

COPY CON AUTOEXEC.BAT <ENTER> (the cursor will drop down one line and blink)
@ECHO OFF <ENTER>
C:\ <ENTER>
SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM <ENTER>
PROMPT SIERRA BOOT DISK $_$P$G <ENTER>
PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\SIERRA <ENTER>

If you are using the MOUSE.COM or MOUSE.EXE file to load your
mouse driver, add the appropriate line:

A:\MOUSE.EXE <ENTER>

If you're playing a CD game, add the MSCDEX line as you write it
down above. For example:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 <ENTER>

If you need to run any sound card initialization programs or load any
drivers, copy them from the 'Sound Cards' section now. The following
example lines are for the SoundBlaster 16:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 T6 <ENTER>
SET SOUND=C:\SB16 <ENTER>
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E <ENTER>
C:\SB16\SB16SET /M:220 /VOC:220 /CD:220 /MIDI:220 /LINE:220 <ENTER>
C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S <ENTER>

Complete the file by pressing <F6> <ENTER>.

STEP 8
REBOOT THE SYSTEM AND START THE GAME
Reboot your system by pressing the <RESET> button on your computer
or by using the <CTRL> <ALT> <DELETE> key sequence on your
keyboard. Follow the instructions in the game manual to start the game.

SECTION 11 - SOUND CARD DRIVER INFORMATION
