SECTION 2 - INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

This program should be installed into MS DOS. If you are in Windows,
exit Windows completely and install in DOS. If you are installing the
disk version, insert Disk 1 into the 3.5" floppy drive, and type the drive
letter followed by a colon. Example: A: [ENTER]. If you are installing
the CD version, insert the CD into the CD drive and type the drive letter
followed by a colon, then press [ENTER]. Then type INSTALL to
begin the installation program. Follow the on-screen prompts to
complete the installation.

SECTION 3 - COMMON INSTALLATION PROBLEMS

PROBLEM: After typing INSTALL, a row of dots goes across the screen
and stops. The computer is locked up with this row of dots appearing
on the screen.
SOLUTION: The dots indicate the hardware detection portion of the
installation program. You can bypass the hardware detection (and
therefore the lockup) by typing INSTALL/M. If this entry doesnt
work, try INSTALL/F. One of these entries should get you past the
lockup. If both entries fail, create a boot disk using the instructions in
Section 9. After booting up with the boot disk, install the game.

PLEASE NOTE: Metaltech: EarthSiege is a DOS game, it will not
play correctly in Windows or through the MS DOS PROMPT in
Windows. Playing in Windows will cause error messages, system
lockups and possible file corruption. Please be sure to exit Windows,
and play the game in DOS.

PROBLEM: CDR-101, unable to read drive D: (or whatever drive your
CD is).
SOLUTION: Check the surface of your EarthSiege CD to verify that there
are no smudges, fingerprints or scratches. Make sure that you have the
latest driver available for your brand of CD ROM. Call the
manufacturer to obtain the newest drivers. Even CD ROM drives
purchased very recently may sometimes ship with outdated drivers.
Most manufacturers have their drivers available to download via
modem, either on their own BBS, or on CompuServe or America On-
Line. You should also make sure that you are using the correct version
of MSCDEX.EXE. Metaltech: EarthSiege works best with MSCDEX
2.23.

SECTION 4 - COMMON GAME PROBLEMS

PROBLEM: You get an "insufficient memory" message when attempting
to run the game.
SOLUTION: Metaltech: EarthSiege requires 3550K of free total memory.
Create a boot disk with the instructions provided in this document, or
return to the INSTALL program and choose the "Make a Bootable
Floppy Disk" option in the installation choices screen.

PROBLEM: You get an "out of environment space" message when
attempting to install the game.
SOLUTION: Check your CONFIG.SYS for a SHELL command. If you
are loading a shell, it has a dedicated form of memory called
"environment space." Raise the memory to at least 1024K.

Example: SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS /P
Change to: SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS /E:1024 /P

PROBLEM: You get a lockup with an "Interrupt 0DH, General
Protection Fault, possible illegal address..." error message after being
dumped back to DOS, with a boot disk or with no memory managers in
use.
SOLUTION: A General Protection Fault in Metaltech: EarthSiege is usually
caused by a conflict between the game and a Cyrix processor. We have
researched the situation with Cyrix and have determined that there are
two situations in which you will have this conflict with a Cyrix
processor:

1) Older 486 DLC chips. If you have a 486 DLC chip, you should get
the lot number and contact Cyrix. They will do their best to help you
eliminate the conflict.

2) 486 DLC chips on 386 motherboards. Cyrix does not recommend
installing the 486 DLC chip onto a 386 motherboard because it can
cause incompatibility problems like a General Protection Fault. The only
way to eliminate the conflict in this instance is to install the 486 DLC
chip onto a 486 motherboard. In addition, remember that Metaltech:
EarthSiege is a protected mode game. Some Cyrix and possibly AMD
chips do not support 32-bit protected mode.

PROBLEM: Lockups while using QEMM.
SOLUTION: The solution is to make a boot disk without using QEMM.
Remember, this game works in 32-bit protected mode and does not
require any memory manager. See Section 9 - Metaltech: EarthSiege
Boot Disk Instructions.

PROBLEM: Introduction races by at a fast rate.
SOLUTION: The CD version of this game requires a sound card with
digital to analog conversion (DAC) to play the introduction properly.
Without a sound card the introduction will race by, and there may be a
loud humming sound from the PC speaker. This will also occur with a
sound card that is incompatible, or improperly set up. See Section 5 -
Sound Issues and Sound Card Settings for information on correctly
configuring your sound card.

PROBLEM: Extremely slow play.
SOLUTION: Check the detail settings in the preference menu screen.
Metaltech: EarthSiege requires 4900K of total free memory to run with
full detail, therefore computers with 4MB of RAM should reduce the
detail to the minimum settings.

PROBLEM: Error message when trying to load the ES.B50 file for
Thrustmaster F-16 FLCS joysticks.
SOLUTION: Use the patch disk, ESPAT1.EXE (see section 7 - Obtaining
a Sierra Patch Disk).

PROBLEM: After loading the Expansion Pack, you get an "insufficient
memory" message when attempting to run the game.
SOLUTION: Metaltech: EarthSiege requires 3550K of free total memory.
Create a boot disk with the instructions provided in this document, or
return to the INSTALL program of Metaltech: EarthSiege and choose
the "Make a Bootable Floppy Disk" option in the installation choices
screen.

PROBLEM: After loading the Expansion Pack, the introduction has
changed to a series of still frames..
SOLUTION: Using the disk version of the Expansion Pack with the CD
version of the game disables the introduction. This is normal.

PROBLEM: Afer loading the Expansion Pack, each time the game is
started, an error message flashes by, and the game crashes to DOS.
SOLUTION: Make sure you are using the correct version of the Expansion
Pack with your game. If you use the cd version of the Expansion Pack
with the disk version of the game, this error will occur.

PROBLEM: After installing the CD version of the Expansion Pack, the
animations in the new battleset do not work.
SOLUTION: Use the Expansion Pack CD instead of the original game cd
rom to play either battleset.

PROBLEM: Random lockups.
SOLUTION: Lockups can be caused by many factors. Try the following:

MAKE A BOOT DISK. Use the automatic boot disk maker by running
INSTALL in the directory of C:\SIERRA\MTECH and selecting the
"Make a bootable floppy disk" option. Or create one manually using the
instructions in section 9. A boot disk will eliminate memory conflicts
which may be causing lockups. Be careful that your sound card drivers
are loaded by the boot disk. If the automatic boot disk maker fails to
find them, they must be added manually.

CHECK THE SOUND CARD CONFIGURATION. Run the
SOUNDSET utility in the C:\SIERRA\MTECH directory and choose
"No Digital Sound Driver." If the lockup problem is solved, then the
problem is in the sound card set up. Re-run SOUNDSET and manually
choose the correct sound card drivers and settings. The auto-detect
feature of the utility may have detected your sound card incorrectly.

DISABLE THE MOUSE DRIVER. Create a boot disk which does not
load a mouse driver, then boot up and run the game. If the lockup goes
away, then you probably have an incompatible or outdated mouse
driver. Sierra recommends Microsofts mouse driver, version 8.2 or
higher, or Logitechs mouse driver, version 6.23 or higher. Changing to
a newer or more compatible mouse driver should clear up the lockup.

CHECK FOR CORRUPTED FILES. At the DOS prompt, run
CHKDSK/F or SCANDISK to detect and correct any errors on your
hard drive. Errors on the hard drive can corrupt files in the game
directory, and cause lockups. If errors are found, fix them, then delete
and reinstall the game. Make sure you have enough hard drive space
before you reinstall the game. See Section 1 - Hardware Requirements
for information on required hard drive space.

SECTION 5 - SOUND ISSUES AND SOUND CARD SETTINGS

Metaltech: EarthSiege supports a variety of different sound cards. The
games sound and music configuration is set up through a program
called SOUNDSET. This program is in the directory
C:\SIERRA\MTECH. The SOUNDSET program is run automatically
when you first install the game, but you can run it again at any time to
change the sound card configuration. If you are having any kind of
sound problems during the game, Sierra recommends that you run the
SOUNDSET program and choose your sound card and settings
manually instead of letting the program auto-detect them. The auto-
detect program occasionally detects the sound card incorrectly and this
can cause problems within the game. If you dont see your sound card
listed under the Digital Sound Driver section of the SOUNDSET
program then refer to your sound cards documentation or contact the
manufacturer of your sound card for help in setting your card to run in a
SoundBlaster mode.

PROBLEM: With AWE32 drivers selected in SOUNDSET for the MIDI
side, the following happens:
After typing ES, several rows of numbers flash on the screen, the screen
clears and returns to the DOS prompt.
SOLUTION: The only work-around at this time is to use the SoundBlaster
16 drivers with the AWE32. Run the SOUNDSET program and choose
SoundBlaster 16 for Digital Sounds and Music

PROBLEM: Lockups or no sound using the MAD16 sound card; game
locks up or sound will not play in Sound Blaster emulation.
SOLUTION: Create a boot disk. Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT of the boot
disk, and type: SET MAD16=C:\MAD16. Save this change and exit to
DOS. Run M16INIT from the C:\MAD16 directory and select
Windows Sound System Emulation at the default settings ( i.e.DMA 1,
IRQ7, PORT 530). Reboot the system, run SOUNDSET and choose
Microsoft Sound System for the sound driver (DMA1, PORT 530, IRQ
will be blank). Save the settings, and start the game.

PROBLEM: You do not get any sound in the game with a Creative Labs
Sound Blaster 16, while using a boot disk.
SOLUTION: The boot disk make will occasionally miss some lines
necessary to configure the SB16 properly. Using a text editor, make
certain that the following lines appear in the files below on the boot disk.
PLEASE NOTE: The following lines are for default configuration of
the Sound Blaster 16 and may vary with your particular system. Please
consult your sound card documentation for further information.

	AUTOEXEC.BAT
	SET SOUND=C:\SB16
	SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H1 P300 T6
	SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E
	C:\SB16\SB16SET /P /Q
	C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S

	CONFIG.SYS
	DEVICEHIGH=C:\SB16\DRV\CTMMSYS.SYS
	DEVICEHIGH=C:\SB16\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /BLASTER:A220 I5 D1 /UNIT:0

PROBLEM: You do not get sound in the game while using a sound card
other than the Sound Blaster 16, running a boot disk.
SOLUTION: As with the SB16 discussed above, lines may have been
omitted from the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files. Section 10
- Sound Card Driver Information contains a list of common sound cards
and the lines for the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.

SECTION 6 - GAME PLAY TIPS

Technical Support has limited information on Metaltech: EarthSiege
strategy and game-play hints. This section contains answers to some
frequently asked questions. For additional game-play information,
Sierra recommends the Metaltech: EarthSiege manual and on-line
forums that address game play. CompuServe and America On-Line have
active forums where you can obtain valuable information from your
fellow EarthSiege combatants.

There is a tutorial on pages 11-14 in your game manual which will be
helpful. It is also advisable to set the Mission Params menu to allow
unlimited ammunition and invulnerability until you are familiar with the
controls and game-play.

Question: I can move my Herc with the joystick, but how do I move the
turret?
Answer: Press button #2 on your joystick, or press INSERT on the
keyboard to change to turret mode. You will still be moving in the same
direction as before, but the turret will move independently. You can also
control the Herc movement with the joystick, and the turret
simultaneously. Press "J" for right, "K" for left, "I" for up, and "M"
for down.

Question: How do I know which Hercs are friends and which are foes?
Answer: Friendly Hercs are light brown, enemy Hercs are gray. On
radar, the enemy is red and team mates are blue. Enemy Skimmers are
yellow. Also, if you push "T" to engage the target, only the enemy can
be targeted.

Question: Im ready to start a career, but I havent mastered the game
completely. How do I set the career mode up for easier play?
Answer: Currently, the career mode comes with just one setting: very
difficult. Installing the patch disk will add the ability to change career
modes to easier settings. See Section 7 - Obtaining a Sierra Patch Disk.

Question: In the First Campaign: Second Mission, I keep getting killed
before I even reach the waypoint. How do I complete the second
mission?
Answer: Read your mission objectives carefully. In many missions the
waypoints are there for your reference and are not part of your
objectives. Your objective here is to just get in close enough to the
enemy base to get a target lock on one of the new "Mongoose" class
enemy Hercs. Once you get your target lock, get away as fast as you
can. There should only be one active enemy Herc you have to deal with
prior to reaching the base, along with a few Arachnitrons (spiders).
Once you are past these, switch to Active radar so that you can get a
target lock from a distance. Once you see the enemy bases buildings
(green dots on your radar screen), bring your Herc to a full stop. You
should be out of range of the bases gun turrets. Press F5 to switch your
display to Target Status. Just cycle through the targets (by pressing T
on your keyboard) until you see a "Mongoose" on your target display.
Now just turn around and leave the area, as soon as you are clear of
enemy contact the mission will be complete.

Question: When I use the Rudder Control System why do the controls
seem to work backwards from the way it works in my flight simulations?
Answer: These are two different types of vehicles which work on
different mechanics. In a flight sim, you are controlling a cable
connected to the rudder at the rear of your plane. In EarthSiege, you are
steering the Herc the same way you would steer a car. When you push
your left foot forward in a plane, this causes the rudder to turn sideways
on the left side of the plane. The wind catches it and pushes the plane to
the left. If you push your left foot forward in EarthSiege it is like
pushing your left arm forward on the steering wheel of your car. Your
car, and your Herc will turn to the right. In ES, the rudder control
pivots the Herc in sync with the pedals.

Question: How do I destroy Skimmers?
Answer: Always destroy enemy Hercs first, before dealing with
Skimmers. Although Skimmers are pesky, they do relatively little
damage. Keep your Herc moving. Press the "F4" key to bring up your
radar. Click on MODE to set your radar to active, then turn your Herc
until the skimmer is in the forward cone of your radar. Click on
TRACK to enable your ATT (Automatic Target Tracking), and press
the "T" key to target the skimmer. Now your Hercs turret will
automatically track the Skimmer and keep it in your sights. Fire at will.

Question: Why do the enemy Hercs keep swarming all over me? Why
are they ignoring the other friendly Hercs?
Answer: Switch off your active radar, and return to passive mode.
Active radar is needed to find targets quickly, and to lock-on your
missles, but the longer it stays on, the more likely you will become the
target. The enemy will home in on your radar emissions and attack en
masse.

Question: How can I stop wasting missiles? Every time I fire, missiles
are launched without locking on to the target first. They always miss.
Answer: Your supply of missiles is limited, and they should be used
only when you have a target in your crosshairs. Remove them from the
firing chain so that they are not fired indiscriminately. To do this, press
and hold the ALT key, followed by the number representing missiles in
the firing order. The green box to the right of the number should
disappear. To launch a missile, simply press the correct number key.
Make sure you have gone to active radar, and have a lock-on.

Question: Gut keeps telling me to capture some new enemy weapons.
How do I do that?
Answer: When you come across an enemy Herc during your mission,
take pains to shoot it in the legs, disabling it rather than destroying it. If
you are an accomplished marksman you can direct your fire carefully,
and blast the enemies weapons off of its torso. Either way, you may
find you have captured a weapon. Captured weapons will show during
your debriefing.

Question: No matter how many Hercs I take out, General Gierling says
Im worthless and should be working for the other side. What does it
take to satisfy this guy?
Answer: The General is a real hard case. It isnt enough to just destroy
Hercs, you must accomplish all of your mission objectives (press F11 if
youve forgotten what they are) and return in decent repair. Some
missions (such as rescuing a comrade) have a time limit. You must
work fast. Gierling will give you a real pat on the back if you manage to
accomplish all of the mission objectives in a healthy and timely manner.

Question: How do I obtain salvage to build new Hercs with, and to
repair damage after each mission?
Answer: Every time you destroy an enemy Herc, you are credited with
the salvage of its remains.

Question: Im in the career mode, and the going is tough. Im stuck
with a weak Herc. How do I obtain a better Herc?
Answer: While youre in the service bay, click on CREW. Highlight
your Herc and click on HERCS. Select the best available Herc for your
own use, and make sure the rest of your crew have the best remaining
Hercs. Once youve collected some salvage, you can click on BUILD
and select a better Herc to be built. When it is finished, return to
CREW and select the newly built Herc.

Question: On some missions, Im supposed to download data from an
enemy base. How do I do that?
Answer: Find the rotating communications dish among the enemy
buildings. Press T to target the building and stand next to it, but do not
destroy it. It would be wise to issue a radio order to your crew members
to prevent them from taking out the target before you can download the
info. Left on their own, they have little direction. Shortly, you will see
the verification in the text box that you have successfully downloaded
the data. Now take out the enemy communications and continue with
the mission.

Question: I have tried all of the suggestions, yet I still have problems
surviving. What else can I try?
Answer: One of the most common strategic mistakes made in
EarthSiege is to march head-on against the Cybrid forces. Their
numbers are many and they usually out-gun you. An indirect hit-and-
run technique may work best for you. Whenever you see an enemy
target on your radar (represented by a red dot) do not just head straight
for it like you would in an arcade game. Look over the situation. How
many are there? Are they moving or stationary? If they are stationary
they are probably guarding something and will tend to stay in that area.
If this is the case many times you can stay just outside of their perimeter
and destroy them where they stand. You can lock on to a target even if
you cannot see it. If you switch your display to Target Status with the
F5 key, you can watch the damage you are doing with long distance
shots. Arm your Herc with as many Autocannons as you can. They do
the most damage from a distance and leave more energy for your shields.
If you are facing several mobile targets, send your crew ahead of you
and then come in right behind them. This will allow you to survive an
unavoidable head-on battle. But most of all, just keep practicing. Your
skills will improve. Plan each attack. Keep aware what you crew is
doing and keep them together.

Question: On the box it says there are 45 missions and 8 campaigns,
but I can only find 40 missions and 5 campaigns. How do I access the
other missions and campaigns?
Answer: If you succeed in every mission, and play the optimal
campaign path, that is all you will see. The other missions and
campaigns are alternates, and you will see them if you lose some
missions. Since there are 5 campaigns per career, to explore the
alternates, you would have to lose the last mission of the first, second or
third campaign. This will put you into the alternate path. There are
actually 60 possible missions, total, but on an average you will play 45
per career.

SECTION 7- OBTAINING A SIERRA PATCH DISK

There are currently two patches available for MetalTech:Earthsiege. The
patch ESPAT1 addresses the following issues:

Getting "extra" Hercs: Hercs from single missions were being
transferred to career files after a "resume" game. This no longer is
the case.
Save Career after end of game: There was an error that allowed you
to back up a career after you had finished the final mission. This
could overwrite data in your career file. The "SAVE" button is now
disabled after you complete the final mission of the game.
Weapon Damage Bitmaps in the Service Bay: Damage bitmaps on
some weapons were not being updated after repairs were made (the
weapons would function normally).
Duplicate wingman names: The pilot names for your copilots have
been corrected and duplicate names removed.
Weapons display: A minor bug was fixed which caused the
"OFFLINE" text to be improperly positioned on the cockpit
weapons display, particularly on a Raptor.
Linked weapons energy use: If a linked weapon was out of energy,
you would not advance to the next weapon in the firing chain with
some weapon configurations.
Thrustmaster FLCS: The mdef line in the Thrustmaster F-16 FLCS
ES.B50 file has been corrected. Attempting to download the
previous .B50 file would generate an error. Please note: You
should select "joystick 1" as your control device in the preferences
menu if you wish to use the programmable features of the FLCS.
TAB key on sign-in screen: The TAB key did not function properly
on the career menu. This could damage a career file. TAB key now
works as outlined in the manual.

In addition, the ESPAT1 adds several new features. When you get the
patch, take a look at the README file for complete details on what the
patch adds.

The patch ESGRAV provides new Gravis drivers for Earthsiege.

The fastest way to obtain a Sierra patch disk is to download it from one
of the following on-line services: the Sierra BBS (206-644-0112),
CompuServe (GO SIERRA) or America OnLine (KEYWORD
SIERRA). The file name is ESPAT1. You can also request a patch
disk be mailed to you by, writing to Sierra On-Line Patch Disks, Dept.
10, PO Box 485, Coarsegold, CA 93614-0485 or faxing to Technical
Support at (206) 644-7697.

SECTION 8 - BOOT DISK INSTRUCTIONS

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read the entire instructions prior to
starting at Step 1. You can skip Steps 3 and 4 if you are not playing the
CD version of Aces of the Deep.

STEP 1
FORMATTING THE DISK
To make a boot disk, format a high density diskette in the A: drive. (It is
necessary to reformat the disk if it is already formatted.) Formatting the
disk with the /S switch will transfer the system files to the disk and
allow the computer to boot up correctly.  The disk must be in the A: drive;
the computer will not boot from the B: drive. Type the FORMAT
command as follows:

FORMAT A: /S <ENTER>

If you get a "Bad command or file name" error message, type:

PATH=C:\DOS <ENTER>

Then retype the FORMAT command above. If you receive the error
again, the MS-DOS FORMAT command may not be on your system, or
it may have been renamed. Programs such as PC Tools and Norton Disk
Utilities sometimes rename the FORMAT command to prevent accidental
loss of data. If you are using a program of this type, check your
documentation to find out how to format a SYSTEM DISK, then proceed
to Step 2.

STEP 2
LOCATING THE MOUSE DRIVER
Sierra games require that a Microsoft compatible mouse driver be loaded
into memory before playing the game. There are two kinds of mouse
drivers available: those that load in the CONFIG.SYS file and those that
load in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. CONFIG.SYS mouse drivers have an
extension of .SYS (MOUSE.SYS) and AUTOEXEC.BAT drivers have
either a .COM or .EXE extension (MOUSE.COM, MOUSE.EXE). You
must load at least one of these drivers, but it is not necessary to load them
all.

If you do not know where the mouse drivers are located on your system,
the command below should help you locate them. Type the following at
the C:\ prompt:

DIR MOUSE* /S <ENTER>

This command will cause the system to search all subdirectories for a file
called MOUSE. If the system locates a MOUSE file, it will display the
path where the file is located. For example, if the MOUSE.COM file is
located in a C:\MOUSE directory, the system will display:

Directory of C:\MOUSE
	MOUSE.SYS 55160 03-10-92	3:10a
	MOUSE.COM 56408	03-10-03	6:00a

If this procedure does not locate a MOUSE file, your mouse driver may
have a different name; some common names for mouse drivers are
IMOUSE, GMOUSE and HPMOUSE. Your should check your mouse
documentation for the exact file names and how to install them.

Once you have located the mouse driver, you must copy it to the boot
disk. The following example assumes that the mouse drivers are located
in the C:\MOUSE directory as shown above. To copy the MOUSE files
to the boot disk, type:

COPY C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.* A: <ENTER>

Substitute the appropriate path and file names for your mouse drivers in
the command above. After you press ENTER, you should see a message
indicating that some files were copied.

STEP 3
LOCATING THE CD ROM DEVICE DRIVER (skip if not playing the CD version)
The CD ROM drive requires a device driver loaded in the CONFIG.SYS
file. This driver must be loaded correctly or you will be unable to access
your CD ROM drive. To make sure that the device driver loads correctly
on the boot disk, look at the CONFIG.SYS on the hard drive and copy the
driver line from there. At the C:\ prompt, type:

TYPE CONFIG.SYS|MORE

NOTE: The | is called a "pipe" command and is created by pressing
<SHIFT> <BACKSLASH>.

The CONFIG.SYS file will display on the screen. Look for the line that
loads the CD ROM device driver. This line will contain the same /D:
switch as the MSCDEX line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Using the
MSCDEX example above, you would be looking for a line containing
/D:MSCD001. The line should look something like this:

DEVICE=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220
DEVICEHIGH /L:14652 =C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220

The device driver in your CONFIG.SYS may differ slightly from those
listed above. Carefully write down the line for use in your boot disk.
Leave out the "HIGH" in "DEVICEHIGH" and the "/L:" information, if
any. Your CD ROM device line should appear as follows:

DEVICE=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220

NOTE: If you have a SCSI CD ROM drive, there may be an additional
driver in your CONFIG.SYS that must be loaded for the CD ROM device
drivers to load correctly. Check your CD ROM drive documentation for
more information.

STEP 4
LOCATING THE MSCDEX CD ROM EXTENSION (skip if not playing the CD version)
In addition to the CD ROM device driver in the CONFIG.SYS, your CD
ROM drive requires MSCDEX, the Microsoft extension for CD ROM
drives. If this extension is not loaded correctly in the AUTOEXEC.BAT,
you will be unable to access your CD ROM drive. To make sure that
MSCDEX loads correctly on the boot disk, look at the AUTOEXEC.BAT
on the hard drive and copy the MSCDEX line from there. At the C:\
prompt, type:

TYPE AUTOEXEC.BAT|MORE <ENTER>

The AUTOEXEC.BAT file will display on the screen. Look for the line
that loads the MSCDEX extension. It should look something like this:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001
LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001
LOADHIGH /L:14429 C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001

The MSCDEX line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT may differ slightly from
the ones above. Carefully write down the entire line following the drive
letter. Include the full drive and path to the MSCDEX file and leave out
any LH or LOADHIGH commands. For example, any of the above lines
should appear as follows:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001

This is how the line will appear in the AUTOEXEC.BAT on your boot
disk.

STEP 5
LOCATING THE SOUND CARD DRIVERS
Many sound cards have drivers or initialization lines that must be loaded
in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. Some sound cards that
require these drivers or initialization routines are: SoundBlaster 16,
MAD16 and the Aria 16.

Section 10 contains lists of the sound card lines for many
common sound cards. Check to see if your sound card is on the list. If it
is, then you will need to add the appropriate lines to the
AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS on your boot disk. If your
sound card is not on the list, you should check your documentation for
information on what needs to be loading in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS.

STEP 6
CREATING THE CONFIG.SYS FILE
To create the CONFIG.SYS file on the boot disk, switch to the A: drive
and type the following:

COPY CON CONFIG.SYS <ENTER> (the cursor will drop down one line and blink)
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS <ENTER>
DOS=HIGH,UMB <ENTER>
FILES=30 <ENTER>
BUFFERS=20 <ENTER>

If you are using the MOUSE.SYS file to load your mouse, add the
following line to the CONFIG.SYS:

DEVICE=A:\MOUSE.SYS <ENTER>

If you're playing the CD version of AOD, add the CD ROM device driver
as you wrote it down in the Locating the CD ROM Device Driver
section. For example:

DEVICE=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220  <ENTER>

If you need to load any sound card drivers, copy them from the "Sound
Cards" section now. The following example lines are for the
SoundBlaster 16:

DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220
I:5 D:1 H:5 <ENTER>
DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTMM.SYS <ENTER>

Complete the file by pressing <F6> <ENTER>.

STEP 7
CREATING THE AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE
To create the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the boot disk, switch to the A:
drive and type the following:

COPY CON AUTOEXEC.BAT <ENTER> (the cursor will drop down one line and blink)
@ECHO OFF <ENTER>
C:\ <ENTER>
SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM <ENTER>
PROMPT SIERRA BOOT DISK $_$P$G <ENTER>
PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\SIERRA <ENTER>

If you are using the MOUSE.COM or MOUSE.EXE file to load your
mouse driver, add the appropriate line:

A:\MOUSE.EXE <ENTER>

If you're playing the CD version of AOD, add the MSCDEX line as you
write it down in the "Locating the MSCDEX CD ROM Extension"
section. For example:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 <ENTER>

If you need to run any sound card initialization programs or load any
drivers, copy them from the "Sound Cards" section now. The following
example lines are for the SoundBlaster 16:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 T6 <ENTER>
SET SOUND=C:\SB16 <ENTER>
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E <ENTER>
C:\SB16\SB16SET /M:220 /VOC:220 /CD:220 /MIDI:220 /LINE:220 <ENTER>
C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S <ENTER>

Complete the file by pressing <F6> <ENTER>.

STEP 8
REBOOT THE SYSTEM AND START THE GAME
Reboot your system by pressing the <RESET> button on your computer
or by using the <CTRL> <ALT> <DEL> key sequence on your
keyboard. Follow the instructions in the game manual to start the game.
