SECTION 2 - INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

If you are in Windows, close Windows completely and exit to a DOS
prompt. Insert Disk 1 and switch to the floppy disk prompt by typing A:
or B:. If you are playing the CD version, insert the CD and switch to the
CD drive by typing the drive letter followed by a colon. Ex: D:. Then
type INSTALL to begin the installation program. Follow the on-screen
prompts to complete the installation.

The CD version of the game includes on-line hints that are installed
separately in Windows. To install these hints, enter Windows, click on
FILE, then click on RUN. In the command line type D:\SETUP
(substitute your CD drive letter if different from D) and click on OK. This
will setup the hints for this program and it will also place a folder on your
desktop, Krondor Hints, to provide easy access to the hint files.

SECTION 3 - COMMON INSTALLATION PROBLEMS

PROBLEM: After typing INSTALL, a row of dots goes across the screen
and stops. The computer is locked up with this row of dots appearing on
the screen.
SOLUTION: The dots indicate the hardware detection portion of the
installation program. You can bypass the hardware detection (and
therefore the lockup) by typing INSTALL /M. If this entry does not
work, try INSTALL /F. One of these entries should get you past the
lockup. If this does not work, create a boot disk using the instructions in
Section 8 - Boot Disk Instructions. After booting up with the boot disk,
install the game. There is also the possibility that you have a set of
defective disks. You should obtain a set of replacements at this point.

PROBLEM: The computer locks up during a manual installation
SOLUTION: If hard drive space is low (under 20 megabytes on a non-
compressed drive), de-fragment the drive. If you do not have a hard drive
de-fragmenting program, freeing up more hard drive space should help. If
you have DOS 6.0 or higher, then you can run DEFRAG to de-fragment
the drive. Refer to your DOS manual for information on DEFRAG.

PROBLEM: During installation you get an error message saying "Unable to
open a target file for writing:..."
SOLUTION: This may occur if there is not enough free hard drive space
available. If a disk compression utility is being used, be sure that there is
at least 34MB of free hard drive space. Without disk compression, it
requires about 17MB. If you have the CD version of this product, then you need
3 MB of hard drive space (6 compressed) for a small install of the program.

PROBLEM: When installing the game, you receive an "Error reading drive
A" or "Error reading drive D". Message will vary depending on what
drive you are installing from.
SOLUTION: If you are installing the floppy disk version of Betrayal at
Krondor, this error message probably indicates a bad disk. The only way
to correct this is to get a new set of disks.

If you are installing the CD version of Betrayal at Krondor, there are
several factors that can cause a "read" error. The most common is a dirty
or scratched CD. You should check the CD to make sure that there are no
smudges, fingerprints, scratches or cracks on it. If you see any smudges
on the CD, clean it off with a soft cloth and try it again. If the disk is
scratched, it will need to be replaced.

If cleaning the CD doesn't help, the problem may lie with the CD ROM
drivers. You should make sure that you are using the latest version
(v2.23) of MSCDEX in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. If you're using DOS
6.0 or higher, use the MSCDEX in your C:\DOS directory, this one is
version 2.23. You should also check with the CD ROM drive
manufacturer to make sure that you have the latest version of their CD
drivers. Outdated or incompatible CD drivers can cause this type of
problem.

If you need to replace your disks or CD, replacement is FREE for the first
90 days of product ownership. After 90 days there is a $10.00 handling
fee per program. For the fastest service, simply mail Disk #1 or the CD
to us along with a copy of your sales receipt dated within 90 days or the
$10.00 handling fee, and a note detailing your computer hardware and the
problem that is occurring. Please include your full name, mailing address,
and daytime telephone number so we can contact you if necessary. We
will then send a complete replacement set of disks to you. The address is:
Sierra On-Line Customer Service, PO Box 485, Coarsegold CA 93614-
0485.

PROBLEM: Unable to write to Resource.005 message during installation.
SOLUTION: If Krondor is installed on a compressed drive with 15-20 MB of
compressed space free, an "Unable to write to Resource.005" message
may occur on Disk #6. Pressing ENTER to continue may give a similar
message on the last disk. You need to free up more hard drive space and
rerun INSTALL. You should also do a manual install of the program.
Manual install instructions are located in the README file on Disk #1.

PROBLEM: You have 276818 bytes free...error message(even though
enough memory is actually available).
SOLUTION: Either the game did not install properly, or you are trying to
run the program from the diskettes or the CD. Try installing under a boot
disk, or use the manual install instructions in the README file to
manually install the program. Make sure you have installed this program
directly to the hard drive. In addition, you should check your mouse
driver. Occasionally, a non-standard mouse driver can cause this problem.
Sierra recommends Microsoft mouse driver 8.20a or higher or Logitech
6.23 or higher.

PROBLEM: Disk Error - Read Error (notice no drive letter)
SOLUTION: This error usually occurs when a memory-resident program
prevents the installation program from reading the game disk correctly.
The easiest way to avoid this is to reboot the computer while holding
down the SHIFT key. This will keep any memory-resident programs from
loading and should allow the game to install correctly. If this does not
help, create a bootdisk using the instructions in Section 8. Reboot the
computer using the bootdisk, then install the game.

SECTION 4 - COMMON GAME PROBLEMS

PROBLEM: When you start the game, you receive a messages stating,
"This game requires 1482k of extended memory".
SOLUTION: Betrayal at Krondor requires 1MB of expanded (EMS) memory
to run. Certain 2 MB systems cannot free up enough memory to run
Betrayal at Krondor no matter what memory manager is being used. The
problem is that these systems use part of the second megabyte of memory
for hardware purposes. If the computer does not count up to 2048 while
it is booting, it probably cannot run Krondor. Make sure you have a 386
or better, have booted from a bootdisk, and that the boot disk is
configured correctly (enough EMS and NO SMARTDRIVE). You can
also contact your computer manufacturer and see if they can produce a
bootdisk that will free up 1MB of EMS and at least 590K of conventional
memory.

PROBLEM: You receive an insufficient memory message when attempting
to run the game.
SOLUTION: This message will occur when you do not have enough
conventional memory (590k) or expanded memory (EMS) free. To free
enough memory to run this game, run the INSTALL program in the game
directory, and select the Make Bootable Floppy option. Once you have
successfully created a bootdisk, reboot the machine using the disk. This
should give you enough memory to run the game.

PROBLEM: You get an "An important data file could not be created..."
message after the introduction.
SOLUTION: This error message may indicate that there are not enough
FILES set in the CONFIG.SYS file. If you have no FILES set in your
CONFIG.SYS you will get this message. You will also get this message
if you have FILES set lower than nine. A boot disk with FILES=30 or
higher should remedy this problem. If the bootdisk does not correct this
error, then you may be out of hard drive space. You can check your hard
drive space by running CHKDSK from your hard drive prompt. This
program requires 17 MB of hard drive space to install (34 MB if
compressed). For CD ROM owners, you will need 2.6 MB of hard drive
space to install and play with a small install (5.2 MB if compressed).
NOTE: The automatic boot disk maker will give you FILES=30.

PROBLEM: The screen is blank during game play or at start up, but the
music continues to play.
SOLUTION: Some video cards cannot display a particular resolution
(640x350x16 colors) that Betrayal at Krondor and some other Dynamix
programs use. The game continues on but the video is not displayed.
Most video card manufacturers have a fix for this problem. If you have a
Diamond Video Card, call Diamond Customer Service at (408) 736-2000
and ask for 2.17 BIOS revision. If you have an STB Video Card: Call
(214) 237-9615 and ask for the file OK.COM. For all other cards, you
should contact the Tech Support line for your particular video card
manufacturer.

PROBLEM: You can't cast spells when using the keyboard.
SOLUTION: It is impossible to cast some spells in Betrayal at Krondor using
a keyboard. You may be able to select certain spells and start to cast
them, but impossible to finish if the spell requires the user to choose an
amount of points to use. If this occurs, you can use automatic battle mode
(click on button to the lower right of combat screen) to finish the battle.
Sierra highly recommends using a mouse with Betrayal at Krondor.

PROBLEM: Clicking an area gives an unrelated explanation.
SOLUTION: This happens if you fight a battle near a cornfield or some
other bit mapped image that gives dialogue, (i.e. If you click on the corn it
should say something like "The ears of corn are too young to eat." ) After
the battle searching the dead bodies may be hard to do as the corn bitmaps
dialogue comes up instead of the "dead body" screens. Move around the
bodies until you cannot see the corn and it should work fine. If this
doesn't help, back away from the bodies and try again.

PROBLEM: You receive an error message "error executing drive C:"
SOLUTION: When this occurs, Disk #1 is corrupted. You need to obtain a
set of replacement disks. The disk replacement policy is explained in the
back of your documentation.

PROBLEM: An "Error writing drive C:" message appears when using QEMM.
SOLUTION: QEMM has an option called STEALTH DOUBLESPACE.
Having this option enabled may cause the "Error Writing Drive C:"
message. To disable this, you should remove or REM-out the ST-
DBL.SYS line from the CONFIG.SYS, but ONLY ON YOUR BOOT DISK!

PROBLEM: The game locks up when you cast the Final Rest spell.
SOLUTION: This spell can cause combat to "hang" if it is cast on a Black
Slayer who is standing in the same combat square as a dead body. Do not
cast this spell when in this situation. Wait until the Black Slayer has
moved before casting the spell.

PROBLEM: The game locks up when blowing the Horn of Algon Kokoon.
SOLUTION: If the Horn of Algon Kokoon is used in a certain trap in
Chapter Six, the game will hang. The trap contains a magic user and two
Wyverns. Do not use the horn when in this trap.

PROBLEM: Lockups using compressed hard drive.
SOLUTION: While playing Krondor the game creates and uses a "swap" file
called TEMP.GAM. That file is used to store current information on the
hard drive instead of in RAM the same way that Windows uses a swap
file. The problem arises when the game is played from a compressed
drive. You need to switch the TEMP.GAM file to a non-compressed
drive. This can be done by editing the RESOURCE.CFG file and adding
the line: tempDir = "drive letter". With DOS 6.0 the line should usually
read:
tempDir = H:
With Stacker it should read:
tempDir = D:
After editing the RESOURCE.CFG, copy the TEMP.GAM file from the
Krondor directory onto the drive that was specified. This information is
also included the README file.

PROBLEM: The game locks up when in a magical trap.
SOLUTION: The patch BAKPAT should take care of these situations. Please
refer to Section 8 of this document for information on obtaining a Sierra
patch disk.

PROBLEM: "MEM 34 Error Heap Corrupt" message appears when
restoring or playing a saved game.
SOLUTION: The save game is corrupted and you will need to restore an
earlier one. If data compression is involved, edit the RESOURCE.CFG
file and add the line "tempDrive = (non-compressed drive letter here). If
this does not work for you, you should delete the program and do a
manual installation. Manual install instructions are included in the
README file.

PROBLEM: Clicking on a dead Moredhel Spellcaster produces a "Must not
be very important" message.
SOLUTION: This occurs just north of Sarth. There is a group of five
Moredhels, four are blue, one is yellow. Clicking on the yellow figure
after the battle is over produces the error message. This is an isolated
incident and should not affect the rest of the program. There is nothing on
this particular spellcaster that is crucial to finishing the game.
NOTE: If the "Must Not Be Very Important" message appears when
clicking on any object, see Gorath, James, Pug, or Patrus shrugged,
"Must Not Be Very Important" message.

PROBLEM: "Gorath, James, Pug, or Patrus shrugged, Must Not Be Very
Important" message.
SOLUTION: You will need to obtain a set of replacement disks to fix this
error. The disk replacement policy is explained in the back of your
documentation. NOTE: If the "Must Not Be Very Important" message appears
when clicking on a yellow Moredhel, see Clicking on a dead
Moredhel...message.

PROBLEM: Not enough virtue keys, rope, or food available, but are
necessary to finish the chapter.
SOLUTION: The patch BAKPAT should take care of these situations. Please
refer to Section 8 of this document for information on how to obtain a
Sierra patch disk. The applies only to the floppy version of Betrayal at
Krondor.

PROBLEM: "Object Not Linked" error message occurs during game play.
SOLUTION: The patch BAKPAT should take care of these messages. Please
refer to Section 8 of this document for information on how to obtain a
Sierra patch disk.

PROBLEM: The computer locks up at random.
SOLUTION: Lockups can be caused by a number of factors. If you are
getting lockups during the game, try the following:

MAKE A BOOT DISK. You can use the automatic boot disk creator by
running INSTALL in the game directory or you can make one manually
using the boot disk instructions included with this document. The boot
disk will eliminate any possible memory conflicts that could be causing
lockups. Be very careful that your sound card and CD ROM drivers are
loaded onto the boot disk!

CHECK THE SOUND CARD CONFIGURATION. Run the INSTALL
program in the game directory and choose PC SPEAKER, then run the
game. If the game does not lock up, then the problem is probably in the
sound card configuration. You should contact your sound card
manufacturer for help with reconfiguring your sound card settings to
avoid conflicts with other devices. If you don't see your sound card listed
in the INSTALL program, refer to your sound card documentation or
contact the manufacture of your sound card for help in setting up your
card to run in a Sound Blaster compatible mode.

CHECK FOR CORRUPTED FILES. At the DOS prompt, run
CHKDSK /F for DOS versions up to 6.0 or SCANDISK for DOS version
6.20. This will allow to you to detect and correct any lost allocation units,
crosslinked files or any other hard drive errors. If you find any, fix them,
then delete and reinstall the game. Errors on the hard drive can corrupt
files and this can cause lockups.

SECTION 5 - SOUND ISSUES AND SOUND CARD SETTINGS

The best settings for a SoundBlaster compatible card are I/O 220, DMA 1
and IRQ 5 or 7. If you're using a Pro Audio card, the best settings are I/O
220, DMA 5 and IRQ 5 for the Pro Audio portion of the card, and DMA
1 and IRQ 7 for the SoundBlaster portion. Make sure that the
SoundBlaster and Pro Audio portions do not share the same DMA!
Settings outside these parameters can cause lockups and/or choppy,
repeating or garbled sound. Most sound cards have test utilities that will
tell you what settings you are using. Check your sound card
documentation for more information.

In addition to these sound card settings, many sound cards require drivers
that must be loaded into the AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS. Section 9 -
Sound Card Driver Information contains a list of common sound cards and
the initialization lines and drivers that must appear in the AUTOEXEC.BAT
and CONFIG.SYS. If your card is not on this list, check your sound card
documentation for the necessary information.

PROBLEM: Sounds are difficult to hear or they are not played.
SOLUTION: If you are low on memory the DAC (digital) sounds will not be
played. Freeing up more memory should correct this. Betrayal at Krondor
requires 590 KB of available conventional memory and 1 MB of EMS.
The easiest way to configure your computer for this memory is to create a
bootdisk. You can make a bootdisk using the INSTALL program in the
game directory or using the manual bootdisk instructions included with
this document.

PROBLEM: With the CD version, the CD Audio music is not being played.
SOLUTION: The CD Audio music will only work if you do a full install of
the game. If you've done a small install, you must reinstall fully to enable
the CD Audio.

PROBLEM: With the CD version, only the sound effects are being played
(full install only).
SOLUTION: Betrayal at Krondor uses CD Audio for the background music.
If you do not have your CD Audio cable connected from your CD to the
sound card, then you will not have music during this game. You can test
this by plugging a set of headphones directly into the CD player. If you
hear music through the headphones, then your CD Audio cable is not
connected.

PROBLEM: No music with a SoundBlaster 16 or compatible sound card.
(CD and floppy disk version.)
SOLUTION: Sometimes the game's installation program will detect a
SoundBlaster 16 or compatible card as a Roland. This will cause the
music to be inaudible. To correct this, run the INSTALL program in the
game directory (or on the CD if you did a small install from the CD) and
select "SoundBlaster/Adlib" for Music.

SECTION 6 - GAME PLAY TIPS

This section covers frequently asked game play questions for Betrayal at
Krondor. Detailed hints are available from the Sierra Hint Line, CD ROM
online hints and the Betrayal at Krondor Strategy Guide. The Sierra Hint
Line number is (900) 370-5583, (USA only, calls are .75 cents per minute
and you must be over 18 or have a parent's permission). For the most
complete strategy and game tips we recommend the Betrayal at Krondor
Strategy Guide, by Prima Publishing. You can contact Prima directly by
calling (800) 531-2343.

Question: Why does the Lord of Lyton refuse to acknowledge the armor?
Answer: In Chapter Two, the Lord of Lyton, located in a house just
outside of town, asks you to collect six suits of Kingdom armor and bring
them back to him. When you do, he says you didn't get them and kicks
you out. The Lord asks for Kingdom armor in good repair. You must
find armor that is at least 85% and it must be Kingdom armor, not Elven,
Tower, etc.

Question: Bodies disappear after fighting and the fighting sequence loops.
Why does this happen?
Answer: At several places in the game there will be no bodies to search
after a fight. As soon as your characters move they are in another fighting
sequence. This is how the game warns you not to go somewhere. You
have a puzzle to solve or a task to fulfill before you can move forward.
There are no bodies to prevent a player from accumulating too much
treasure. This can happen in Kenting Rush, where you must bribe the
goblin leader before you can advance, or when you attempt to locate
Moreaulf without the proper spell.

Question: How come the party cannot cross underground caverns?
Answer: There are several pits you cannot cross. When you attempt to
cross you fall in the pit and die. One of your characters must be carrying
rope. Rope is available in most caverns, usually in an unlocked box. To
cross a pit, stop at the edge of the pit and left click on the pit. A window
will appear asking if you wish to cross the pit. Choose "yes" and you will
swing across the pit. Everytime you cross a pit, you will lose one piece of
rope from your inventory.

Question: Why can't the characters enter Sarth in Chapter Six?
Answer: In this chapter, Owyn and Gorath must go to Sarth to find the
Book of Macros. Normally when you run the mouse pointer across the
mountain that Sarth rests atop, the cursor will change to "Temple, Shop
or Enter." Because the Abbey of Sarth has gone mad, a spell has been
cast that blocks entry into the city. The cursor will only read "Enter" and
this option will not gain you entry into the city. Move the pointer to the
lower left side of the mountain until you find a spot that changes the
cursor to "Enter." This is a hidden tunnel which leads to the city.

Question: Why aren't the Moredhel word lock chests legible?
Answer: When you attempt to open a chest the word lock is
indecipherable hieroglyphics. This happens only when your characters are
James, Locklear and Patrus. Gorath is the only character that can read
Moredhel. When you attempt to read a chest when Gorath is not in the
party the Moredhel writing will appear to be gibberish. To read the chest,
Patrus must cast the magic spell "Union". This spell lasts a short
duration, but if several chests are located close together you can read two
or three before it wears off.

Question: Is the party able to teleport to all of the Temples?
Answer: Temples do not appear on map or they appear but you can not
teleport to them. Temples must be visited before they will appear on the
teleport map. Some Temples have an empty teleport grid. You can not
teleport to Temples that have an empty grid.

Question: Why is it that keys are missing from my inventory?
Answer: Keys may mysteriously vanish from your inventory if you have
visited Prank's stone. The stone discharges energy that seems to do
nothing. Later, you find your keys are gone. Don't touch the stone.

Question: How does the magic spell "Gift of Sung" work?
Answer: When Owyn or Patrus cast this spell you choose how many hit
points to deduct from the caster that will be given to the target. Some
times, when you cast the spell the points are deducted, but the target does
not receive them. All spells depend on several factors. Distance and
casting ability determine whether or not the spell will succeed. If it fails,
the hit points are deducted and the target gets nothing. As the caster's
ability increases so will spell dependability.

Question: What effect does Nalar's Rib have?
Answer: Nalar's Rib is a stone monolith located in the far north. If you
place an emerald on it, you get text telling you of its power and nothing
seems to happen. Nalar's Rib is like a neutron bomb. In area
surrounding the stone there are countless enemies to engage. After
feeding an emerald to the stone, they will all be dead.

Question: Why can't I see Nighthawks clearly underground?
Answer: Nighthawks dress in black and the caverns are dark. You can't
see the Nighthawks until it's too late to avoid them. The Nighthawks are
supposed to be hard to see. They are more or less the Ninjas of this
world. You'll have to stand and fight.

Question: Why do my characters suddenly become ill and die of
poisoning?
Answer: There are two reasons for this. Some food is poisoned. The
food you take from a body may be poisoned. Right click on food parcels
to see if they are spoiled or poisoned. Weapons such as swords and
arrows can be coated with poison as well. An opponent may strike you
with a poisoned weapon during a fight.

Question: When is the Sky Fire spell effective?
Answer: You may find that the Sky Fire spell or the Lightning Staff
doesn't work. Both the staff and the spell work the same way. You can't
use it below ground, so it will not work in caverns. Above ground, it will
work only on opponents who have metal. Beasts or witches are therefore
immune to this spell.

Question: Why are some spells not available or not working?
Answer: There are several factors that can affect the success of a spell:

1. The spell caster must have enough hit points to cast the spell. In
Chapter Eight, the spell caster must have the Crystal Staff that has been
charged with Mana.

2. Spells will fail a certain percentage of the time. Improving spell
casting ability through practice and combat will help.

3. The Sky Fire spell or the Lightning Staff work only above ground and
on enemies who have metal. The Lightning Staff has a finite number of

SECTION 7 - OBTAINING A SIERRA PATCH DISK...

There is currently one patch available for Betrayal at Krondor. This
patch (BAKPAT) is for the floppy disk ONLY and addresses the
following issues:

-You can now toggle between a "fixed" and a "rotating" overhead map
display by pressing the "n" key while viewing the overhead map.

-Extra rope was added to Chapter Five. It was possible to reach
Chapter Five and not be able to find any rope.

-The "Final Rest" lockup has been fixed. Casting the "Final Rest"
spell on a Black Slayer could cause the game to "hang" if there was a
dead body in the same combat cell.

-More supplies have been added at the beginning of Chapter Nine.

-Under unusual circumstances, a very powerful sword (available only
in Chapter Six) could add to an opponent's HEALTH/STAMINA
rather than take points away. This problem has been corrected.

-Another clue has been added in Chapter Three.

-Armorcraft and weapons skills now increase at a quicker rate.

-Items placed in moredhel lock chests can no longer be "stolen".

The fastest way to obtain a Sierra patch disk is to download it from one of
the following on-line services: the Sierra BBS (206-644-0112),
CompuServe (GO SIERRA) or America OnLine (KEYWORD SIERRA).
The file name is BAKPAT. You can also request a patch disk be mailed
to you by writing to Sierra On-Line Patch Disks, Dept. 10, PO Box 485,
Coarsegold, CA 93614-0485.

SECTION 8 - BOOT DISK INSTRUCTIONS for IBM compatibles w/MS-DOS 5.0 or above

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read the entire instructions prior to starting at Step 1. You can skip Steps 3 and 4 if
you are not playing the CD version of Betrayal at Krondor.

STEP 1
FORMATTING THE DISK
To make a boot disk, format a high density diskette in the A: drive. (It is
necessary to reformat the disk if it is already formatted.) Formatting the
disk with the /S switch will transfer the system files to the disk and
allow the computer to boot up correctly.  The disk must be in the A: drive;
the computer will not boot from the B: drive. Type the FORMAT
command as follows:

FORMAT A: /S <ENTER>

If you get a "Bad command or file name" error message, type:

PATH=C:\DOS <ENTER>

Then retype the FORMAT command above. If you receive the error
again, the MS-DOS FORMAT command may not be on your system, or it may
have been renamed. Programs such as PC Tools and Norton Disk Utilities
sometimes rename the FORMAT command to prevent accidental loss of data.
If you are using a program of this type, check your
documentation to find out how to format a SYSTEM DISK, then proceed
to Step 2.

STEP 2
LOCATING THE MOUSE DRIVER
If you are playing a game that uses a mouse, the Microsoft compatible
mouse driver must be loaded into memory with the boot disk. There are
two kinds of mouse drivers available: those that load in the CONFIG.SYS
file and those that load in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. CONFIG.SYS mouse
drivers have an extension of .SYS (MOUSE.SYS) and
AUTOEXEC.BAT drivers have either a .COM or .EXE extension
(MOUSE.COM, MOUSE.EXE). You must load at least one of these drivers,
but it is not necessary to load them all.

If you do not know where the mouse drivers are located on your system,
the command below should help you locate them. Type the following at
the C:\ prompt:

DIR MOUSE* /S <ENTER>

This command will cause the system to search all subdirectories for a file
called MOUSE. If the system locates a MOUSE file, it will display the
path where the file is located. For example, if the MOUSE.COM file is
located in a C:\MOUSE directory, the system will display:

Directory of C:\MOUSE
	MOUSE.SYS 55160 03-10-92	3:10a
	MOUSE.COM 56408	03-10-03	6:00a

If this procedure does not locate a MOUSE file, your mouse driver may
have a different name. Some common names for mouse drivers are IMOUSE,
GMOUSE and HPMOUSE. You should check your mouse documentation for the
exact file names and how to install them.

Once you have located the mouse driver, you must copy it to the boot
disk. The following example assumes that the mouse drivers are located
in the C:\MOUSE directory as shown in the step above. To copy the MOUSE
files to the boot disk, type:

COPY C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.* A: <ENTER>

Substitute the appropriate path and file names for your mouse drivers in
the command above. After you press ENTER, you should see a message
indicating that some files were copied.

STEP 3
LOCATING THE CD ROM DEVICE DRIVER (skip if not playing the
CD version of Betrayal at Krondor)
The CD ROM drive requires a device driver loaded in the CONFIG.SYS
file. This driver must be loaded correctly or you will be unable to
access your CD ROM drive. To make sure that the device driver loads
correctly on the boot disk, look at the CONFIG.SYS on the hard drive
and copy the driver line from there. At the C:\ prompt, type:

TYPE CONFIG.SYS|MORE

NOTE: The | is called a "pipe" command and is created by pressing
<SHIFT> <BACKSLASH>.

The CONFIG.SYS file will display on the screen. Look for the line that
loads the CD ROM device driver. The line should look something like this:

DEVICE=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220
DEVICEHIGH /L:14652 =C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220

The device driver in your CONFIG.SYS may differ slightly from those
listed above. Carefully write down the line for use in your boot disk.
Leave out the "/L:" information, if any. If the "HIGH" in "DEVICEHIGH" is
missing, add it. Any of the above CD ROM device lines would appear as
follows:

DEVICEHIGH=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220

NOTE: If you have a SCSI CD ROM drive, there may be an additional
driver in your CONFIG.SYS that must be loaded for the CD ROM device
drivers to load correctly. Check your CD drive documentation for more
information.

STEP 4
LOCATING THE MSCDEX CD ROM EXTENSION (skip if not playing the CD version)
In addition to the CD ROM device driver in the CONFIG.SYS, your CD
ROM drive requires MSCDEX, the Microsoft extension for CD ROM drives.
If this extension is not loaded correctly in the AUTOEXEC.BAT, you will be
unable to access your CD ROM drive. To make sure that MSCDEX loads
correctly on the boot disk, look at the AUTOEXEC.BAT on the hard drive and
copy the MSCDEX line from there. At the C:\ prompt, type:

TYPE AUTOEXEC.BAT|MORE <ENTER>

The AUTOEXEC.BAT file will display on the screen. Look for the line
that loads the MSCDEX extension. It should look something like this:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001
LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001
LOADHIGH /L:14429 C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001

The MSCDEX line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT may differ slightly from
the ones above. Carefully write down the line for use in your boot disk.
Leave out the "/L:" information, if any. If the "LH" is missing from the
beginning of the MSCDES line, add it now. If the "/:E" switch is missing
from the end of the line, add it. For example, any of the above
lines will appear on your boot disk as follows:

LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /:E

STEP 5
LOCATING THE SOUND CARD DRIVERS
Many sound cards have drivers or initialization lines that must be loaded
in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. Some sound cards that require these
drivers or initialization routines are the SoundBlaster 16, MAD16 and the
Aria 16.

Section 9 - Sound Card Driver Information contains a list of
sound card lines for many common sound cards. Check to see if your
sound card is on the list. If it is, add the appropriate lines to the
AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS on your boot disk. If your sound card is
not on the list, check your documentation for information on what needs to
load in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.

STEP 6
CREATING THE CONFIG.SYS FILE
To create the CONFIG.SYS file on the boot disk, switch to the A: drive
and type the following:

COPY CON CONFIG.SYS <ENTER> (the cursor will drop down one line and blink)
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS <ENTER>
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 1024 <ENTER>
DOS=HIGH,UMB <ENTER>
FILES=30 <ENTER>
BUFFERS=20 <ENTER>

If you are using the MOUSE.SYS file to load your mouse, add the
following line to the CONFIG.SYS:

DEVICEHIGH=A:\MOUSE.SYS <ENTER>

If you're playing the CD version of Betrayal at Krondor,
add the CD ROM device driver as you wrote it down in the "Locating the CD ROM
Device Driver" section. For example:

DEVICEHIGH=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220 <ENTER>

If you need to load any sound card drivers, copy them from the "Sound
Cards" section now. The following example lines are for the SoundBlaster 16:

DEVICEHIGH=C:\SB16\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220 I:5 D:1 H:5 <ENTER>
DEVICEHIGH=C:\SB16\DRV\CTMM.SYS <ENTER>

Complete the file by pressing <F6> <ENTER>.

STEP 7
CREATING THE AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE
To create the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the boot disk, switch to the A:
drive and type the following:

COPY CON AUTOEXEC.BAT <ENTER> (the cursor will drop down one line and blink)
@ECHO OFF <ENTER>
C:\ <ENTER>
SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM <ENTER>
PROMPT SIERRA BOOT DISK $_$P$G <ENTER>
PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\SIERRA <ENTER>

If you are using the MOUSE.COM or MOUSE.EXE file to load your
mouse driver, add the appropriate line:

LH A:\MOUSE.EXE <ENTER>

If you're playing the CD version, add the MSCDEX line as you write it down
in the "Locating the MSCDEX CD ROM Extension" section. For example:

LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 <ENTER>

If you need to run any sound card initialization programs or load any
drivers, copy them from the "Sound Cards" section now. The following
example lines are for the SoundBlaster 16:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 T6 <ENTER>
SET SOUND=C:\SB16 <ENTER>
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E <ENTER>
C:\SB16\SB16SET /M:220 /VOC:220 /CD:220 /MIDI:220 /LINE:220 <ENTER>
C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S <ENTER>

Complete the file by pressing <F6> <ENTER>.

STEP 8
REBOOT THE SYSTEM AND START THE GAME
Reboot your system by pressing the <RESET> button on your computer
or by using the <CTRL> <ALT> <DELETE> key sequence on your keyboard.
Refer to your game documentation for the steps to start the game.

If you continue to have memory problems even when using the boot disk
and you are playing the CD ROM version of Betrayal at Krondor, delete the
game, do a FULL install and play the game from the hard drive. This
allows you to take the CD ROM drivers out of the CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT, which frees up more conventional memory.
