SECTION 2 - INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

Insert the CD or Disk #1 into the appropriate drive. From Program
Manager, click on File, then Run. In the Command Line field, type the
letter of the drive followed by :\SETUP. Example: D:\SETUP or
A:\SETUP

Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation. When you are
done, the icon for the game will be in a Bright Star group in Program
Manager.

SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION PROBLEMS

PROBLEM: Windows displays an error saying, "APPLICATION
EXECUTION ERROR: Cannot find file SETUP (or one of its
components.) Check to ensure the path and the file name are correct."
SOLUTION: You have either typed in the wrong drive letter or you have
the wrong disk in the drive. If you are unsure about what the drive letter
is, try the letters A and B if the game came on disks, or D and E if the
game is on a CD.

PROBLEM: The game's icon was not created during game installation.
SOLUTION: This is usually caused by an alternate Windows desktop, like
Norton Desktop, PC Tools or Tabworks. You should disable these
desktops before installing the game. The easiest way to do this is to
type PATH=C:\WINDOWS at the DOS prompt, then start Windows.
This should start Windows with Program Manager as the desktop.
When you are back in Windows, reinstall the game. The icons will be
created normally. To restart Windows using your normal desktop, exit
Windows and reboot the computer. The next time you go into Windows,
the alternate desktop will display. PLEASE NOTE: Bright Star games
have not been tested under any alternate desktop environments, therefore
we cannot guarantee that the game will function properly under these
desktops.

PROBLEM: When installing the game, you receive an 'Error reading
drive A' or 'Error reading drive D'. Message will vary depending on
what drive you are installing from.
SOLUTION: If you are installing the floppy disk version, this error
message probably indicates a bad disk. The only way to correct this is
to get a new set of disks.

If you are installing the CD version, there are several factors that can
cause a 'read' error. The most common is a dirty or scratched CD. You
should check the CD to make sure that there are no smudges,
fingerprints, scratches or cracks on it. If you see any smudges on the
CD, clean it off with a soft cloth and try it again. If the disk is
scratched, it will need to be replaced.

If this doesn't work, the problem may lie with the CD ROM drivers.
You should make sure that you are using the latest version (v2.23) of
MSCDEX in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. If you're using DOS 6.0 or
higher, use the MSCDEX in your C:\DOS directory, this one is version
2.23. You should also check with the CD ROM drive manufacturer to
make sure that you have the latest version of their CD drivers. Outdated
or incompatible CD drivers can cause this type of problem.

If you need to replace your disks or CD, replacement is FREE for the
first 90 days of product ownership. After 90 days there is a $10.00
handling fee per program. For the fastest service, simply mail Disk #1
to us along with either a copy of your sales receipt dated within 90 days
or the $10.00 handling fee, and a note detailing your computer hardware
and the problem that is occurring. Please include your full name,
mailing address, and daytime telephone number so we can contact you if
necessary. Be sure to specify which size disk you want in return. We
will then send a complete replacement set of disks to you. The address
is: Sierra On-Line Customer Service, PO Box 485, Coarsegold CA
93614-0485.

SECTION 4 - MEMORY ISSUES

PROBLEM: You get a message stating, 'Insufficient memory to run this
application. Please make sure all other applications are closed.'
SOLUTION: All of the Bright Star programs require that you have at least
4 megs of RAM on your system. If you are sure you have 4 megs and
are still getting this error, please follow the troubleshooting steps listed
after the next problem.

PROBLEM: You get a message stating, '[EMATH.EXE] has caused a
General Protection Fault in module [256_1024.DRV] at
[00007:d3100.]' (The words in the [ ] might vary.)
SOLUTION: General Protection Faults in Windows are usually caused
when two programs are conflicting in memory. The following steps will
clear-up most General Protection Faults.

Check the Swap File: Establish a permanent swap file at about 6 MB.
This will help free up memory. Do not set the swap file too high, 6-10
MB permanent should be enough. Follow these steps to access and
change the Windows swap file.
1. Close all Windows applications.
2. Open the "Main" folder on your Windows desktop.
3. Double-click on the "Control Panel" icon.
4. Double-click on the "386 Enhanced" icon.
5. Click on the "Virtual Memory . . ." button.
6. Click on the "Change>>" button.
7. Type "6000" in the "New Size" selection box, under the "New
Settings" heading.
8. Select "Permanent" from the "Type" pull down combination box, if it
is available. If "Permanent" is not available, select "Temporary".
9. If "32-bit File Access" is checked, un-check it. This should remain
turned off. If you have a "32-bit Disk Access" option, leave it checked.
10. Click the "OK" button.
11. Click the "Restart Now" button.
Windows will restart and take you back to the main Windows desktop.

Create a Clean Windows Environment: Make sure that there are no
other Windows programs running. Disable all screen savers, virus
scans, etc. If you are using an alternate Windows desktop (PC Tools,
Dashboard, Packard Bell Navigator, Tabworks, etc.), use plain Program
Manager instead. If you have sound-related Windows programs
installed (IconHearIt, SoundBits, etc.), make sure they are disabled
before starting the game.

Create a Boot Disk: Instructions for creating a Windows boot disk are
included at the end of this troubleshooting guide. Delete the game from
the hard drive, boot up your computer with the boot disk you've created,
and then reinstall the game. This will make sure the game is installing
properly.

Turn Off 32-Bit File Accessing: Windows for Workgroups and
Windows 3.11 include a setting for 32-bit File Access in the Virtual
Memory settings. This should be turned off. If you are using Windows
3.1, you will see 32-bit Disk Access instead. Leave this on.

Update your Video Drivers: Check with your video card manufacturer
to make sure you have the latest version of their Windows video drivers.
Outdated video drivers are a common cause of General Protection
Faults.

SECTION 5 - VIDEO ISSUES

PROBLEM: Starting the game, you get a message saying "STOP,
[EMATH] requires support for 256 colors...'
(Game name in [ ] will vary.)
SOLUTION: Bright Star games require that Windows is running in 256
color mode. Even though your monitor and video card may be capable
of displaying 256 colors, Windows may not be set up to use this
resolution. To check, double-click on Windows Setup in the Main
program group. If the Display line reads "VGA" or "16 color", you will
need to change to a driver that supports 256 colors. ("VGA" is a default
Windows video driver that only supports 16 colors and will not work
with Sierra's Windows games.) To change video drivers, select Options,
then Change System Settings. Open the Display box to see the list of
video drivers that are currently available. You should check your video
card documentation for information on what 256 color driver to select.
If you chose more than 256 colors, you might get strange coloring or
black screens. Make sure you only choose the 256 color drivers.

Warning: Be careful when changing video drivers! If you choose one
that is not designed for your particular video card, Windows will not
display properly. If this occurs, change to your Windows directory,
type: SETUP, and choose the "VGA" driver again. You should then
contact your video card manufacturer for the correct driver.

PROBLEM: The game starts up, but it does not look correct. It may look
like a few horizontal bands that are shifted around or perhaps a 'cookie
cutter' effect.
SOLUTION: The Bright Star games have been programmed to certain
industry standards for displaying graphics in Windows. A few video
cards do not follow those standards and therefore do not display the
game correctly. There is nothing we can change internally to the game to
make the it display properly, the fix must come from the video card
manufacturer. Many of the manufactures of those cards have written
new Windows video drivers to fix the problem. You can get updated
drivers by contacting the manufacturer of your computer or contacting
the video card manufacturer directly. If you cannot get new drivers to
fix the graphics, or if you get new drivers and they do not fix the
problem, please refer to the return/exchange policy listed in the back of
your game manual.

SECTION 6 - SOUND ISSUES

PROBLEM: When starting the game, you get the message, "STOP,
[EMATH] requires a sound card ..." error message. (Game name in [ ]
will vary.)
SOLUTION: Bright Star programs require a sound card with DAC
capability; these games will not run if there is no sound card installed. If
you have a sound card and are still getting this error, the message
indicates your sound card is not installed correctly in Windows. If any of
the needed drivers are missing from your system, you will receive this
message.
The following drivers are included with Windows and should be present
in the Drivers section of Control Panel:

MIDI Mapper
Timer
[MCI] MIDI Sequencer
[MCI] Sound

If you are missing any of these drivers, they can be installed by choosing
the Add button in the Drivers window and installing them off of your
Microsoft Windows Installation disks. In addition to these standard
Windows drivers, there should be two or three sound card-specific
drivers. These drivers should have the name of your sound card in their
title. If these are missing, you will need to reinstall the sound card
drivers off of the sound card installation disks. To check and see if the
drivers are installed correctly, open the Media Player in the Accessories
group. Choose Device from the menu, and in the list that pops down,
you should see at least a MIDI Sequencer and Sound listing. If they are
not in the list, even after reinstalling the [MCI] drivers, your drivers are
still not installed correctly and you should contact your sound card
manufacturer for additional help.

PROBLEM: When starting the game, you get the message, "STOP,
[EMATH] requires an asynchronous sound card..." (Game name in [ ]
will vary.)
SOLUTION: This error messages indicates that you are probably using an
external sound device such as a Disney Sound Source. Bright Star
games require an internally installed sound card to achieve the voice
synchronization in the game. Bright Star games will not work with the
Disney Sound Source or an external sound device on a laptop computer.
If you do not have an external sound card, this message means your
sound card drivers are probably not installed correctly, please see the
previous solution for the steps on how to install Windows sound drivers.

PROBLEM: Starting the game gives you a "Waveout Open" or "Waveout
Prepare Header" error message.
SOLUTION: The Windows error message you are receiving indicates that
your sound card is in use by another program. This is occasionally
caused by another sound program taking control in Windows and not
sharing the sound card properly. Programs like Icon Hear It, Wired for
Sound or Packard Bell Navigator can cause this type of problem. Some
screen savers like After Dark will also access the sound card directly
instead of using Windows to produce sounds. You should disable all
programs of this type before playing the game.

If you are still experiencing sound problems, you may need to update
your sound drivers. If you do not have the current Windows drivers for
your sound card, you may need to contact the manufacturer of your
sound device or your local hardware supplier for an updated set of
sound drivers. Check your Windows documentation or your sound card
documentation for full instructions on updating your sound drivers.

SECTION 7 - GENERAL ISSUES
Issues in this section can occur in any of the Bright Star games. Game-
specific issues follow this section.

PROBLEM: You can not get the stop sign to appear so that you can exit
the program, you cannot get into the parent's choices screen and perhaps
even the monkey (Bananas) has disappeared from the screen.
SOLUTION: Someone (and we all know who that someone probably is)
has gone into the parent's choices area, changed some of the settings,
unknowingly changed the password, and has locked you out that area.
To get back into the parent's choices screen, you will have to use the
skeleton-key code. This was the year that your game was created (1992,
1993, or 1994 - try them all until you find the right one.) You can type
this in on the 10-key pad on the keyboard, or use the mouse cursor
(which is a pointed finger) to tap out the numbers on the little 10-key in
the corner of the screen. Once you get back into the Parent's choices, we
recommend you change the password to something simple to remember
(like 1234) so your child cannot get into the Parent's choice area again.

PROBLEM: When you click on the icon, it blinks out and then goes back
to the program manager.
SOLUTION: This occurs when Windows is missing some of the required
sound drivers. The TIMER driver is often the missing driver. Please
refer to Section 6 for the steps to install these drivers.

PROBLEM: Strange problems such as missing pieces of the screen, very
fast speech, or lockups.
SOLUTION: Most problems for Bright Star games are caused by outdated
sound or video card drivers. If your problem is not listed in Section 8
'Specific Game Issues', you should contact the sound or video card
manufacturer and get the latest set of drivers for Windows.

SECTION 8 - SPECIFIC GAME ISSUES

ALPHABET BLOCKS
Requires 9 MB of hard drive space for the disk version, 1 MB for the
CD version. (Double these amounts if you are using disk compression.)

PROBLEM: The backgrounds are black, but you can see Bananas and
Jack.
SOLUTION: This will happen if a 32,000 color Windows driver is being
used. Alphabet Blocks will only work in 256 color mode. See Section 5
for help changing the video card drivers.

PROBLEM: Characters only pronounce certain letters.
SOLUTION: On certain computer systems, Jack only says the letters "C F
S X Z" and Bananas "F H J L M N S V X Z", otherwise the program
works normally. On Disk #1 there is a version number, if this number is
2.1, you need a free upgrade. Please send Disk #1 to the Customer
Service address listed at the end of this document and we will send you a
full set of disk replacements. The newest version is 2.0.3 (which seems
earlier than 2.1, but it's not, honest.)

PROBLEM: Lock-up when seventh banana is selected.
SOLUTION: On Disk #1 there is a version number, if this number is 2.1,
you need a free upgrade. Please send Disk #1 to the Customer Service
address listed at the end of this document and we will send you a full set
of disk replacements.

PROBLEM: There is no speech. Bananas and Jack just sit there and stare
at you.
SOLUTION: This happens when not all of the correct sound drivers being
installed in Windows. Specifically the TIMER driver. Please refer to
Section 6 for the steps to install this driver.

PROBLEM: Starting the game gives you a "Waveout Open" or "Waveout
Prepare Header" error message.
SOLUTION: This is an error that you will receive on a newer Compaq
Presario with an ESS Audiodrive sound card. The patch, ABCOMPAQ,
will correct this problem. Please see Section 9 - Obtaining a Sierra Patch
Disk.

BEGINNING READING (READY-SET-READ)
Requires 11 MB of hard drive space for the disk version, 1 MB for the
CD version. (Double these amounts if you are using disk compression.)

PROBLEM: You get a message saying 'Ready, Set, Read requires a
sound card that supports 11 KHz or better playback rates.'
SOLUTION: This is a case of not all of the correct sound drivers being
installed in Windows. Please refer to Section 6 for the steps to install
these drivers.

PROBLEM: There is no speech. Bananas and Jack just sit there and stare
at you.
SOLUTION: This occurs when Windows is missing some of the required
sound drivers. The TIMER driver is often the missing driver. Please
refer to Section 6 for the steps to install these drivers.

PROBLEM: The game will lock up on the second page of the story book.
SOLUTION: These lockups usually occur if you have a Cirrus video card.
You will need to contact Cirrus or your hardware manufacturer for
updated video drivers. You can find Cirrus's phone and BBS numbers in
section 11 of this guide. If you do not have a Cirrus video card, contact
the correct video card manufacturer for Windows drivers updates.

EARLY MATH
Requires 9 MB of hard drive space for the disk version, 1 MB for the
CD version. (Double these amounts if you are using disk compression.)

PROBLEM: When Loid drives the car past the "bridge" puzzle and
attempts to eat an apple, an Application Error will occur. By selecting
IGNORE, the game will continue as normally and no ill effects will
result.
SOLUTION: Choose the Ignore button and continue play. The
MATHCD.EXE patch will fix this problem permanently. Please see
Section 9 for information on obtaining a Sierra patch disk. This problem
ONLY occurs in the CD version. If you get a General Protection Fault
and you are in a different location or you are using the disk version of
the game, please refer to Section 4 for troubleshooting steps.

KID'S TYPING
Requires 14 MB of hard drive space for the disk version, 1 MB for the
CD version. (Double these amounts if you are using disk compression.)

PROBLEM: Random lock ups with no error messages.

PROBLEM: The game will not progress. My child is doing the same
lessons over and over.
SOLUTION: Kid's Typing is keeping track of your child's progress and
will not go on until your child has achieved a certain accuracy level.
This is done so the game will not progress beyond your child's skill
level. Practice is the key!

PROBLEM: I cannot get the certificates to print correctly.
SOLUTION: This is usually caused by outdated or incompatible Windows
printer drivers. If you are experiencing this problem, you will need to
contact the printer manufacturer for technical support.

SPELLING JUNGLE (YOBI'S BASIC SPELLING
TRICKS)
Requires 11 MB of hard drive space for the disk version, 1 MB for the
CD version. (Double these amounts if you are using disk compression.)

PROBLEM: Can't restore games that you have been playing.
SOLUTION: If you move the game to a different directory after installing
it, the game will no longer be able to find the saved games. You will
need to reinstall the game and choose the new location during the
installation process.

PROBLEM: Can't solve ABOUT puzzle
SOLUTION: Many players have a problem getting past the darts when
trying to get the letter O. When Wali is at the very bottom of the screen,
put the cursor at the far right, then hold the left mouse button down.
Wali is just fast enough to get past the flying darts. He can then safely
go straight up to get the O.

PROBLEM: Can't solve a certain word and you are frustrated!!!
SOLUTION: All of the words can be solved. Some are more difficult than
others, but they can all be completed. We cannot provide hints other
than the clues given in the manual. Sorry, no help can be given on the
Customer Service or the Technical Support lines. Here are some general
pointers.
1. Try not to think too linearly. Plan ahead, move things around or pick
up objects before you pick up any of the letters.
2. To get the hippo to move, you throw him an apple when he bobs out
of the water. Each apple gets you five seconds of 'hippo driving.' If
you need to go a long way, feed the hippo more apples before you get
on.
3. Keep as far away from the tricksters as possible. The tricksters can
only shoot at certain angles. Learn to keep in their blind spots as much
as possible.
4. You do not have to completely walk onto a letter to pick it up. Using
the arrow keys, just 'tag' the letter you want and run the other way if
there is tiger on the other side of the letter or if a trickster is shooting at
the letter.

PROBLEM: Joystick does not work.
SOLUTION: The manual states the that game can use a joystick. This is
incorrect. This game can only be controlled with the keyboard or the
mouse.

SPELLING BLIZZARD (YOBI'S ADVANCED SPELLING
TRICKS)
Requires 12 MB of hard drive space for the disk version, 1 MB for the

PROBLEM: Can't solve the word APPROVAL.
SOLUTION: Many people have a problem solving this word because they
are thinking too linearly. The trick is to move the snow ball into place
before getting the letter R in the word approval. Get to the mound
above the snow ball. Push the snow ball south. Then push the snow
ball east so it rests against the letter R. From mound of above the new
position of the snowball, push the snow ball south again. The snow ball
is now in a position where it can be used to cross the river. Don't forget
to get the rest of the letters on the east side of the river before pushing
the snow ball in the river and crossing.

PROBLEM: Can't solve a certain word and you are frustrated!!!
SOLUTION: All of the words can be solved. Some are more difficult than
others, but they can all be completed. We cannot provide hints other
than the clues given in the manual. Sorry, but no help can be given on
the Customer Service or the Technical Support lines. Here are some
general pointers.
1. Try not to think too linearly. Plan ahead, move things around or pick
up objects before you pick up any of the letters.
2. Keep as far away from the tricksters as possible. The tricksters can
only shoot at certain angles. Learn to keep in their blind spots as much
as possible.
3. You do not have to completely walk onto a letter to pick it up. Using
the arrow keys, just 'tag' the letter you want and run the other way if
there is wolf on the other side of the letter or if a trickster is shooting at
the letter.

Bright Star Boot Disk
 Instructions
for IBM compatibles using MS-DOS 5.0 or above
and Windows 3.1 or higher

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read the entire instructions prior to
starting at Step 1. You can skip Steps 2 and 3 if you are not playing a
CD game.

STEP 1
FORMATTING THE DISK
To make a boot disk, format a high density diskette in the A: drive. (It is
necessary to reformat the disk if it is already formatted.) Formatting the
disk with the /S switch will transfer the 'system files' to the disk and
allow the computer to boot up correctly. The disk must be in the A:
drive; the computer will not boot from the B: drive. Type the FORMAT
command as follows:

FORMAT A: /S <ENTER>

If you get a 'Bad command or file name' error message, type:

PATH=C:\DOS <ENTER>

Then retype the FORMAT command above. If you receive the error
again, the MS-DOS FORMAT command may not be on your system, or
it may have been renamed. Programs such as PC Tools and Norton
Disk Utilities sometimes rename the FORMAT command to prevent
accidental loss of data. If you are using a program of this type, check
your documentation to find out how to format a SYSTEM DISK, then
proceed to Step 2.

STEP 2
LOCATING THE CD ROM DEVICE DRIVER (skip if not playing
a CD game)
The CD ROM drive requires a device driver loaded in the
CONFIG.SYS file. This driver must be loaded correctly or you will be
unable to access your CD ROM drive. To make sure that the device
driver loads correctly on the boot disk, look at the CONFIG.SYS on the
hard drive and copy the driver line from there. At the C:\ prompt, type:

TYPE CONFIG.SYS|MORE

NOTE: The | is called a 'pipe' command and is created by pressing
<SHIFT> <BACKSLASH>.

Step 2 continued...
The CONFIG.SYS file will display on the screen. Look for the line that
loads the CD ROM device driver. This line will contain the same '/D:'
switch as the MSCDEX line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Using the
MSCDEX example above, you would be looking for a line containing
'/D:MSCD001'. The line should look something like this:

DEVICE=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220
DEVICEHIGH /L:14652 =C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS
/D:MSCD001 /P:220

The device driver in your CONFIG.SYS may differ slightly from those
listed above. Carefully write down the line for use in your boot disk.
Leave out the 'HIGH' in 'DEVICEHIGH' ant the '/L:' information, if
any. Your CD ROM device line should appear as follows:

DEVICE=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220

NOTE: If you have a SCSI CD ROM drive, there may be an additional
driver in your CONFIG.SYS that must be loaded for the CD ROM
device drivers to load correctly. Check your CD drive documentation
for more information.

STEP 3
LOCATING THE MSCDEX CD ROM EXTENSION (skip if not
playing a CD game)
In addition to the CD ROM device driver in the CONFIG.SYS, your CD
ROM drive requires MSCDEX, the Microsoft extension for CD ROM
drives. If this extension is not loaded correctly in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT, you will be unable to access your CD ROM drive.
To make sure that MSCDEX loads correctly on the boot disk, look at
the AUTOEXEC.BAT on the hard drive and copy the MSCDEX line
from there. At the C:\ prompt, type:

TYPE AUTOEXEC.BAT|MORE <ENTER>

The AUTOEXEC.BAT file will display on the screen. Look for the line
that loads the MSCDEX extension. It should look something like this:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001
LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001
LOADHIGH /L:14429 C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001

The MSCDEX line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT may differ slightly from
the ones above. Carefully write down the line for use in your boot disk.
Leave out the '/L:' information, if any. For example, any of the above
lines will appear on your boot disk as follows:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001

STEP 4
LOCATING THE SOUND CARD DRIVERS
Many sound cards have drivers or initialization lines that must be loaded
in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. Some sound cards that
require these drivers or initialization routines are the SoundBlaster 16,
MAD16 and the Aria 16. At the end of these Boot Disk Intructions, you
will find a section labelled 'Sound Cards'. These tables contain the
sound card lines for many common sound cards. Check to see if your
sound card is on the list. If it is, you will need to add the appropriate
lines to the AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS on your boot disk.
If your sound card is not listed, you should check your documentation
for information on what needs to load in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS.

STEP 5
CREATING THE CONFIG.SYS FILE
To create the CONFIG.SYS file on the boot disk, switch to the A: drive
and type the following:

COPY CON CONFIG.SYS <ENTER> (the cursor will drop down
one line and blink)
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS <ENTER>
DOS=HIGH,UMB <ENTER>
FILES=30 <ENTER>
BUFFERS=20 <ENTER>

If you're playing a CD game, add the CD ROM device driver as you
wrote it down in the 'Locating the CD ROM Device Driver' section.
For example:

DEVICE=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220
<ENTER>

If you need to load any sound card drivers, copy them from the 'Sound
Cards' section now. The following example lines are for the
SoundBlaster 16:

DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0
/BLASTER=A:220 I:5 D:1 H:5 <ENTER>
DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CTMM.SYS <ENTER>

Complete the file by pressing <F6> <ENTER>.

STEP 6
CREATING THE AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE
To create the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the boot disk, switch to the A:
drive and type the following:

COPY CON AUTOEXEC.BAT <ENTER> (the cursor will drop
down one line and blink)
@ECHO OFF <ENTER>
C:\ <ENTER>
SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM <ENTER>
PROMPT SIERRA BOOT DISK $_$P$G <ENTER>
PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\SIERRA <ENTER>

If you're playing a CD game, add the MSCDEX line as you write it
down in the 'Locating the MSCDEX CD ROM Extension' section. For
example:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 <ENTER>

If you need to run any sound card initialization programs or load any
drivers, copy them from the 'Sound Cards' section now. The following
example lines are for the SoundBlaster 16:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 T6 <ENTER>
SET SOUND=C:\SB16 <ENTER>
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E <ENTER>
C:\SB16\SB16SET /M:220 /VOC:220 /CD:220 /MIDI:220
/LINE:220 <ENTER>
C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S <ENTER>

Complete the file by pressing <F6> <ENTER>.

STEP 7
REBOOT THE SYSTEM AND START WINDOWS
Reboot your system by depressing the <RESET> button on your
computer or by using the <CTRL>, <ALT>, <DEL> key sequence on
your keyboard. When you are at a C:\ prompt, type WIN /3 to start
Windows.

STEP 8
CREATE A CLEAN WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT
You should make sure that all screen savers, virus scans, and sound-
related Windows programs (IconHear It, Wired for Sound, etc.) are
disabled before starting your game. In addition, if you are using an
alternate Windows desktop like Norton Desktop or PCTools, disable this
and use standard Program Manager

Also, make sure you have a swap file set up that is at least 8 MB
permanent or 16 MB temporary. You can check your swap file settings
in the 386Enhanced icon in the Control Panel.
