Multiple installations:

Having more than one version of Red Baron 3D installed on your machine at a time can cause the game not to function properly. We highly recommend that you have only one copy of Red Baron 3D installed on your machine. In order to avoid problems, if you have previously installed Red Baron 3D on more than one location on your machine you should uninstall Red Baron 3D using the Red Baron 3D Uninstaller, found on the Red Baron 3D entry on your start menu. You should then delete any files that still remain in any directories where Red Baron 3D had been located. After this, reinstall Red Baron.

** NOTE
The Red Baron 3D Demo requires about 40 megabytes for the game; however, the game requires that Windows has at least 80MB free hard drive space at all times to function properly. Windows will use this free space for memory swapping. If there is less than 80MB hard drive space free on the Windows drive after installation then you will receive a warning requesting that you should free up more hard drive space.

II. JOYSTICK ISSUES
----------------------
Because of difficulties switching video modes while in Glide and Direct Draw modes, many pop-up system requests are be disabled in these modes. One of these requests was the system's joystick calibration routine. Because of this, you can not calibrate joysticks while in the game. In general this doesn't cause any difficulties, but it does make you need to take one extra step when enabling force feedback joysticks.

To enable your force feedback joystick in single player, go to the Preferences, select Graphic Setting, then go to the Graphics Options screen and click the checkbox to run the sim in Windowed mode. While in the sim in Windowed mode, right click to bring up the options menu and choose to calibrate your joystick. You should now be able to turn on force feedback support. Once you have done this, you can exit the simulation and return your Grapic Setting to Glide or Direct Draw mode. You can enable your force feedback joystick in any graphics mode in multiplayer by right clicking to bring up the options menu and choosing joystick.

Note also that the realism options control aircraft torque. This will cause most aircraft to tend to roll to the left. This is normal and not a joystick calibration problem. To verify that your joystick is operating correctly in Red Baron 3D, you may disable torque in the Realism Options.

III. GENERAL TECHNICAL ISSUES
----------------------------
- INSTALLATION
How to install the Red Baron 3D Demo

The Red Baron 3D Demo comes in a self-extracting executable (RB3DDemo.exe). To install the Red Baron 3D Demo, simply double-click on the file and follow the on-screen instructions.

Installation Size -- 120 MB Total (40MB for the game plus 80MB free hard drive space.)

Windows requires some free hard drive space in order to use its virtual memory management system (swap file). Without this free space Windows may not run efficiently. Red Baron 3D requires that you have at least 80 MB free on your Windows drive so that Windows will have the proper system environment for the game to run on.

If you have manually set your virtual memory settings, make sure that your setting is for at least 80 MB. Virtual memory settings can be found in the Control Panel under SYSTEM. Click on the Performance tab and then on the Virtual memory button. Sierra recommends that you let Windows 95 manage your virtual memory settings.

If you choose to run with less than 80 MBs free hard drive space, you may experience poor performance in Red Baron 3D. You may experience game crashes if the virtual memory size is extremely low.

- Freeing up Hard Drive Space
Removing programs you no longer use any more is the best way of freeing up hard drive space. To uninstall most programs you can use the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS utility located in the Control Panel. This solution will only help if the programs are located on the Windows 95 Drive (or the drive that is being used for Virtual memory - See Windows 95 help for more information on virtual memory).

The recycle bin located on the Windows 95 Desktop also may be full. To empty the recycle bin, right click on the Recycle Bin. A menu will appear with the option to "empty recycle bin". Click this option to free up hard drive space.

- UNINSTALLING RED BARON 3D
There are two ways to uninstall Red Baron 3D. You may select the Red Baron 3D Demo from the list of programs in the Add/Remove Programs section of your Windows Control Panel, or simply select the 'Uninstall Red Baron 3D Demo' icon from the Sierra\Red Baron 3D Demo folder in your Start Menu.

Both options may leave icons in your Start menu until you reboot the system.

- DIRECT DRAW 5
Some video cards may have problems using Direct Draw. If you experience problems running the game in full screen mode, press the keys <ALT-ENTER> while in the game to toggle from full screen mode (Direct Draw) to Windowed Mode. You can also change the Window setting in the Preferences Menu within Red Baron 3D. In the Red Baron 3D main menu, click on thePreferences button. A graphics preference screen should appear.

To change from full screen mode to windowed mode just check the appropriate box under graphics.

If you wish to run Red Baron 3D in full screen mode and are having problems, check with your hardware manufacturer for updated display drivers that support DirectX 5. You can also set your display properties to run in 640X480.

- GLIDE DRIVERS
For 3D acceleration support, Red Baron 3D requires version 2.43 of the Glide drivers for Voodoo I and 2.51 for Voodoo II. The game will notify you if your driver is not new enough. Please note that some Voodoo II cards may require custom drivers. Consult your 3D card manufacturer if you experience problems.

- DISPLAY MODES
Software rendered mode (Direct Draw and windowed)-- Red Baron 3D supports resolutions up to 1024 x 768 in 256 colors in both Direct Draw and windowed mode. If the 1024 x 768 resolution choice is grayed out when you select Direct Draw, you may only be able to play at that resolution in windowed mode. When playing in windowed mode, for best results we recommend that you set you Windows screen resolution to the same resolution in which you wish to play Red Baron 3D. When playing in software rendered mode, please keep in mind that the resolution you choose can have a significant effect on frame rate. If you are unable to get an acceptable frame rate, consider using a lower resolution.

3D accelerated mode -- If you have a Glide compatible 3DFX based card, the option to play in Glide mode will be available to you in graphics preference. Depending on the texture memory availble on your card, not all resolutions may be available. While you cannot change display modes from within the simulation, you will be able to change resolutions.

Screamin' 3D users -- If you have a Rendition-based Screamin' 3D card, you may experience game problems if you have drivers previous to version 2.20.07. The most current drivers are available from the Sierra website. You may also experience cursor difficulties if you run the game in 512x384 mode under Direct Draw. The simulation should run correctly, but the cursor may be constrained to only part of the screen. Running in 640x480 mode should correct this problem.

Silicon Integrated Systems video boards -- If you have a Silicon Integrated Systems Co. SIS 559715598 2MB Graphics card, you may need driver version 4.10.01.0905 or newer for the simulation to appear correctly.

- Screen Savers
Because joysticks do not naturally deactivate screen savers while being used, Red Baron 3D disables your screen saver during game play. This prevents the screen saver from interrupting the game while it is being played. When the game is exited, the screen saver is then set to its previous state prior to the game being started.

- JOYSTICKS
Calibration In The Game
If you are playing single player in windowed mode a calibration program is available in the game. If you click the right mouse button while in a mission, an option for Calibrate is available in a menu. Click on this option. A program should then start which allows you to select the joystick, calibrate it, and test it. In Direct Draw and Glide mode, this feature has been disabled to avoid problems caused by switching modes. If you are playing in either of these modes, you should calibrate your joystick by using the Joystick or Game Controllers utility found in the Control Panel.

Force Feedback
Force Feed Back is supported for Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback Pro.
All other force feedback joysticks:
If you have problems getting force feedback to work properly with Red Baron 3D try using a custom joystick setup for your joystick. In some cases, not using the manufacturers provided joystick driver has enabled force feedback to work for some joysticks.

If this does not work, your joystick manufacturer may be able to help resolve the problem.

Rudder Controls
If you are using rudder pedals and have no throttle, or if you are using a programmable throttle in a mode that emulates keyboard inputs (such as a Thrustmaster (TM) TQS), rudder inputs will not be recognized. To remedy this, make the following change in the rb2sim.ini file, located in the main directory of Red Baron 3D:

[Controls]
RudderIsThirdAxis=1

This switches the 3rd and 4th joystick input axes. If you set this when you have a control for both throttle and rudder, it will switch the two. For instance, on a Microsoft Sidewinder (TM) it will make the "twist" axis of the joystick control throttle and the throttle wheel control the rudder. In most cases this isn't desirable, but could have some uses, especially if you are using a second joystick as rudder/throttle control.

HINTS AND TIPS

Remember that parachutes were not given to pilots for fear that they would abandon their plane early. Don't jump out of your plane unless you really need to. Jumping out even in the best of circumstances can lead to a broken ankle, which could lead to an infection and ultimately death.

If you are wondering why the terrain detail lowers when you fire your machine guns, it is because Combat Detail is on in the Graphics Preferences. Right clicking in the sim and selecting terrain will allow you to alter this as well.

If you have an engine fire, reduce your throttle (or turn off the engine) and go into a dive to blow out the flames. Then keep your throttle low to stop engine overheating and prevent a fire from re-occurring.

V. GENERAL GAME ISSUES
------------------------
The on-line manual provides detailed information about the game. To access the on-line manual select the Help button from the Main Menu, press F1 at any time while in the shell, or click on the 'Red Baron 3D Online Help' icon located in the Sierra\Red Baron 3D Demo group in your Start Menu (if you chose to install this icon during installation). To avoid mode-switching problems when in Direct Draw or Glide mode, the help file is not available in the sim.

Installing Utilities

Microsoft's(R) DirectX 5(TM) is required to run the Red Baron 3D Demo. You can get the latest DirectX drivers on the World Wide Web at www.microsoft.com/directx/default.asp.
